Описание: Samuel Beckett and Pain is a collection of ten essays which explores the theme of pain in Beckett’s works. Experiencing both physical and psychological pain in the course of his life, Beckett found suffering in human life inevitable, accepted it as a source of inspiration in his writings, and probed it to gain deeper insight into the difficult and emotionally demanding processes of artistic creation, practice and performance. Acknowledging the recent developments in the study of pain in literature and culture, this volume explores various aspects of pain in Beckett’s works, a subject which has been heretofore only sporadically noted. The topics discussed include Beckett’s aesthetics and pain, pain as loss and trauma, pain in relation to palliation, pain at the experience of the limit, pain as archive, and pain as part of everyday life and language. This volume is characterized by its plural, interdisciplinary perspectives covering the fields of literature, theatre, art, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. By suggesting more diverse paths in Beckett studies, the authors hope to make a lasting contribution to contemporary literary studies and other relevant fields.

Описание:

In 1936, Samuel Beckett wrote a letter to the Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein expressing a desire to work in the lost tradition of silent film. The production of Beckett's Film in 1964, on the cusp of his work as a director for stage and screen, coincides with a widespread revival of silent film in the period of cinema's modernist second wave.

Drawing on recently published letters, archival material and production notebooks, Samuel Beckett and Cinema is the first book to examine comprehensively the full extent of Beckett's engagement with cinema and its influence on his work for stage and screen. The book situates Beckett within the context of first and second wave modernist filmmaking, including the work of figures such as Vertov, Keaton, Lang, Epstein, Flaherty, Dreyer, Godard, Bresson, Resnais, Duras, Rogosin and Hitchcock.

By examining the parallels between Beckett's methods, as a writer-director, and particular techniques, such as the embodied presence of the camera, the use of asynchronous sound, and the cross-pollination of theatricality and cinema, as well as the connections between his collaborators and the nouvelle vague, the book reveals how Beckett's aesthetic is fundamentally altered by his work for the screen, and his formative encounters with modernist film culture.

Описание: From Waiting for Godot to such later novels as Ill Seen, Ill Said, the work of Samuel Beckett is filled with Biblical references. Samuel Beckett and the Bible re-appraises the relationships between Beckett's work and the Bible, exploring both as objects of history, matter and memory. Iain Bailey ranges across the Beckett oeuvre to examine how the Bible has come to be regarded as a book of unique significance in his work, offering innovative readings of intertextuality and influence in both published and archival writings. Beckett's Bibles, the book demonstrates, are thoroughly material, as significant for their involvement in histories of education, the family, common knowledge and canon-formation as for what they have to say about God, hope and salvation. The book explores Beckett's uneasy forms of memory, materiality, language and history to assess how far and in what ways the Bible matters in his work, and why Beckett's voice ‘harps, but no worse than Holy Writ.'

In L'Elaboration du mythe du soi Solveig Hudhomme highlights how Samuel Beckett's works build a myth of their own, the myth of a space, a permanent inner space going beyond the textual boundaries. This inner place, "the self" as we can call it, is a place liberated from biography, from the ego but also a place in which some invariants can be found. This study focuses on the way stories introduce a principle of repetition so that the reader can recognize a place, a narrative, a character. As the story develops, contingency slowly grows into necessity.

Samuel Beckett is a funny writer. He is also an author whose work is taken to respond ethically to the unspeakable seriousness of the post-Holocaust situation. How can these two statements sit together?

Ranging widely over Beckett's fiction, drama and critical writings, and including readings of Murphy, the Trilogy, Waiting for Godot, Endgame, the late prose and the late plays, this book demonstrates that it is through Beckett's comic timing that we can understand the double gesture of his art: the ethical obligation to represent the world how it is while, at the same time, opening up a space for how it ought to be.

Key Features:
  • Presents innovative readings of the comedy found in Beckett's fiction, drama and critical writings
  • Spans Beckett's entire oeuvre, using published and unpublished sources
  • Engages with recent and contemporary philosophical approaches to literature, including work by Derrida, Badiou, Levinas, and Adorno
  • Makes a unique contribution to theoretical work on comedy and laughter
  • Provides a rigorous introduction to the theoretical debates surrounding the relationship between modernist literature and a post-war ethics of representation
