Описание: Within the field of neuroscience, the past few decades have witnessed an exponential growth of research into the brain mechanisms underlying both normal and pathological states of consciousness in humans. The development of sophisticated imaging techniques to visualize and map brain activity in vivo has opened new avenues in our understanding of the pathological processes involved in common neuropsychiatric disorders affecting consciousness, such as epilepsy, coma, vegetative states, dissociative disorders, and dementia. This book presents the state of the art in neuroimaging exploration of the brain correlates of the alterations in consciousness across these conditions, with a particular focus on the potential applications for diagnosis and management. Although the book has a practical approach and is primarily targeted at neurologists, neuroradiologists, and psychiatrists, it will also serve as an essential reference for a wide range of researchers and health care professionals.

The authors present a comprehensive description of current state-of-the-art clinical neuroimaging for glioblastoma. They cover the basic concepts and most recent applications of clinical structural neuroimaging, as well as the latest innovations and up-and-coming techniques for functional imaging of glioblastoma patients.Few comprehensive books are available in this challenging field of clinical medicine. The co-editors are experienced academic neuroradiologists with an active interest in clinical imaging and research of glioblastoma, all within a vibrant clinical environment at Stanford University where the latest innovations in glioblastoma imaging and treatment are being developed. In compiling this book, the co-editors have called upon many of the worlds best clinical and basic neuroscientists specializing in the management of patients with this malignancy, for their expert input on the latest imaging developments and applicable research into glioblastoma. This book is intended for neuroradiologists, neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, radiation therapists, and other physicians and scientists engaged in the study and clinical management of patients with glioblastoma. It should also serve as a unique educational and research resource for students and more experienced practitioners alike within this rapidly evolving field.

Описание: Regular physical exercise is associated with substantial health benefits. Recent evidence not only holds for cardiovascular effects promoting "physical health", but also for the central nervous system believed to promote "brain health”. Moderate physical exercise has been found to improve learning, memory, and attentional processing, with recent research indicating that neuroprotective mechanisms and associated plasticity in brain structure and function also benefit. Physical exercise is also known to induce a range of acute or sustained psychophysiological effects, among these mood elevation, stress reduction, anxiolysis, and hypoalgesia. Today, modern functional neuroimaging techniques afford direct measurement of the acute and chronic relation of physical exercise on the human brain, as well as the correlation of the derived physiological in vivo signals with behavioral outcomes recorded during and after exercise. A wide range of imaging techniques have been applied to human exercise research, ranging from electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to positron emission tomography (PET). All of these imaging methods provide distinct information, and they differ considerably in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, availability, cost, and associated risks. However, from a “multimodal imaging” perspective, neuroimaging provides an unprecedented potential to unravel the neurobiology of human exercise, covering a wide spectrum ranging from structural plasticity in gray and white matter, network dynamics, global and regional perfusion, evoked neuronal responses to the quantification of neurotransmitter release. The aim of this book is to provide the current state of the human neuroimaging literature in the emerging field of the neurobiological exercise sciences and to outline future applications and directions of research.

Описание: Neuroimaging has had an enormous impact on the way human cognition is studied in vivo. With the advent of fMRI, scientists have been able to ask questions regarding individual differences which could not have been addressed with PET. These are particularly important for studying developmental disorders, such as dyslexia, because research suggests that participants with dyslexia (DPs) form a heterogeneous population. This book discusses neural correlation between reading deficits in individuals with developmental dyslexia. It also includes topics on electrical imaging in neuropsychiatry; prenatal magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine; and normal pressure hydrocephalus.
