Описание: The use of oxygen in the activated-sludge process has grown over the past decade from a position of relative obscurity and limited academic interest to a position today of occupying a prominent role as a secondary wastewater treatment process. The purpose of this two-volume series is to present a consolidated and comprehensive reference on oxygen-activated sludge technology. The subject matter is treated in considerable breadth and depth. The fundamental advantages of oxygen use and operation of the activated sludge process at high mixed-liquor dissolved oxygen levels is covered in detail. Many basic concepts of activated sludge system process design, equally applicable to both air and oxygen systems, are also included. The present status of the oxygen-activated sludge process is due in large measure to the development and commercialization of the UNOX System. This series is devoted almost exclusively to the UNOX oxygen-activated sludge system. Volume I of the series is divided into two parts which includes: (1) historical and background material relating to the use of oxygen and the development of the UNOX System, and (2) the basic process design considerations involved in oxygen-activated sludge system design. Volume II of the series is also divided into two parts consisting of (3) overall oxygenation system design considerations and additional applications, and (4) oxygen supply.

Описание: Activated carbon is simple to operate as an adsorption medium for water, serves as a proactive barrier for contamination, and does not produce by-products from its use. Used in treatment worldwide, activated carbon produces very high-quality water. Its implementation helps utilities gain regulatory compliance and position themselves to meet future requirements. This solutions-oriented book for water treatment providers, engineers, and students covers three major areas of concern.1. Fundamentals of activated carbon adsorption to provide a basic understanding of activated carbon technologies for drinking water treatment.2. Adsorption applications, approaches, and case studies that demonstrate how and where activated carbon has been implemented to solve specific water quality challenges.3. System design and procurement approaches to achieve effectiveness and efficiency in the use of granular activated carbon and powdered activated carbon.

Описание: In this collection, the authors report on the pretreatment methods for waste activated sludge based on pulsed electric field and corona discharge techniques. The effects of pulse magnitude, frequency, temperature and pretreatment time are demonstrated on the basis of cell membrane electroporation. The influence of voltage polarity, frequency, magnitude, treating time and temperature has also been demonstrated. A description of fundamental techniques in molecular biology for the analysis of the microbiota of activated sludge is provided. Activated sludge is a heterogeneous system of organisms, organic and inorganic material, and therefore giving a specific protocol for each molecular technique would be imprudent. The authors go on to discuss the Monod model, which provides a functional relationship between specific growth rate and substrate concentration in the bulk. Important research efforts dedicated to adequate use of the Monod model are presented, consolidating knowledge from activated sludge and biofilm modelling, identifying misdirections, and setting parameters for further research. In one study, different microwave power outputs and times were optimised for sludge solubilisation without evaporation loss in waste activated sludge from two different sources. The variable effects of pre-treatments on extracellular polymeric substances fraction, cellular oxidative stress and solubilisation of both sludges were evaluated to understand the impact of sludge complexity. The penultimate chapter examines how toxic carbon sources can cause higher residual effluent dissolved organic carbon than easily biodegraded carbon sources in the activated sludge process. Based on the variations of chemical components of activated sludge, mainly intracellular storage materials, extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products, the performance and mechanism of toxic carbon on the activated sludge process can be clarified. The purpose of the final study is to research the supplementation of different concentrations of substrate on the degradation rate of xenobiotics, and to determine the optimal concentrations of auxiliary substrates that are most beneficial. The results show that sugar and peptone can affect 2,4-D degradation rate by several different degrees at different concentrations.

Описание: Biological nutrient removal (BNR), the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater, is a complex process. Although the activated sludge process is an efficient technology for the removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS), it provides less-than-optimal conditions for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, and presents numerous challenges to the operator trying to satisfy the many requirements for several different groups of bacteria. In addition to satisfying the requirements there are numerous, highly variable operational conditions that impact BNR. These conditions include: changes in strength and composition of the wastewater, alkalinity and pH, temperature, and presence of inhibitory and toxic wastes. Even fluctuations in flows, especially from inflow and infiltration, can adversely impact the aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic conditions needed for successful BNR. Of the three treatment processes, nitrification, denitrification, and enhanced biological removal, nitrification is often the most difficult to achieve. Therefore, a large portion of this book reviews nitrification. Operators of the activated sludge process need to understand the basic biological, chemical, and physical requirements for BNR in order to improve the performance of these treatment processes. An Operator’s Guide to Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) in the Activated Sludge Process is intended to help operators in the monitoring, troubleshooting, and process control of BNR. Numerous tables and figures are included in the book to help the operator understand the biological and chemical reactions that are involved in BNR processes and how the reactions can be monitored for process control.Design of BNR processes is not addressed in this book. Design is addressed in numerous engineering publications. The book serves to help operators achieve permit compliance for nitrogen and phosphorus discharge limits and obtain cost-effective operation.
