Описание: Barry Eichengreen presents a new analysis of the Depression by exploring the link between global economic crisis and the the gold standard (the framework for international monetary affairs until 1931). The events described had a profound effect upon twentieth-century history: the Depression abetted the rise of Hitler and the demise of the gold standard is a historical cause of inflation.

Описание:

" This] book provides a practical hands-on perspective for implementing function focused care in all settings... It] is a unique resource that is relevant for all nurses and health care providers working with older adults. In addition to addressing functional decline, function-focused care provides a fresh and practical solution to many of the problems that tend to arise with older adults such as infections, falls, and pressure ulcers all known to be associated with immobility."

From the Foreword by Colin Milner
CEO, International Council on Active Aging

"This book encourages individualization, which is difficult to achieve with more prescriptive approaches. This second edition includes chapters on cognitively impaired adults, ethical issues, and patient-centered care, all of which are so important in long-term care. I found it to be very motivating in the way it helped me apply the philosophy and strategies to elders with whom I come in contact. I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with elders. Score: 95, 4 Stars--Doody's Medical Reviews

The purpose of restorative care nursing (often referred to as function-focused care) is to take an active role in helping older adults maintain their highest level of function, thereby preventing excess disability. This is the only volume to educate caregivers about both the philosophy of restorative care and how to integrate it into all care settings for older adults. Now in its second edition, the text contains updated content in each chapter along with two entirely new chapters on function-focused care for cognitively impaired adults, ethical issues, and patient-centered care.

The book provides a complete six-week education program in restorative care for nurses and other caregivers, numerous practical suggestions for beneficial activities that will enhance function, and strategies for motivating both older adults and caregivers to engage in restorative care. Woven throughout the text is research that documents the benefits and expected outcomes of restorative care. The book also includes the requirements for restorative care across all settings, and the necessary documentation. "Restorative Care Nursing for Older Adults" will help formal and informal caregivers and administrators at all levels assimilate the philosophy of restorative care and be able to develop and implement successful restorative care programs. This New Edition Features:

Completely updated information, including two new chapters on function-focused care for cognitively impaired adults, ethical issues, and patient-centered care A six-week education program that teaches practical application of restorative care nursing Helpful suggestions and strategies for motivating older adults and caregivers Education materials designed for nursing home, assisted living, and acute care settings, including required documentation and goal-setting forms Educational materials for family caregivers

Описание: Over the last two decades, many changes have happened to the social welfare policies of various industrial countries. Citizens have seen their pensions, unemployment benefits, and general healthcare policies shrink as “belt tightening” measures are enforced. But in contrast, long-term care has seen a general growth in public financing, an expansion of beneficiaries, and, more generally, an attempt to define larger social responsibilities and related social rights. The aim of this book is to describe and interpret the changes introduced in long-term care policies in Western Europe. The volume argues that recent reforms have brought about an increasing convergence in LTC policies. Most of the new programs have developed a new general approach to long-term care, based on a better integration of social care and health care. The book explores increasing public support given to family care work (in the past, the family would take care of the elderly or infirm) and increasing growth and recognition of a extended social care market (by which care has shifted from a moral obligation based on family reciprocity to a paid, professional activity). A new social care arrangement has therefore been developing in Western countries, based on a new mix of family obligations, market provision, and public support. In order to understand such changes, this analysis will take into account the social and economical impact of these reforms.

This is a must read for all health professionals.""

oRichard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS (From the Foreword)

Distinguished Professor, University of Arizona

Promoting the health literacy of patients across all settings is an essential component of prevention, wellness, and effective medical treatment. This health literacy textbook provides an overview of health literacy, discusses the magnitude of the issue, and explains implications of low health literacy. It details strategies to enhance effective communication between patients and nursing practitioners. Through case-based examples, this textbook and clinical guide assists nurses in developing the requisite skills needed to communicate effectively so that patients can truly make informed health decisions and enhance health outcomes.

"Health Literacy in Nursing "promotes verbal and written communication strategies that nurses can use to effectively meet the individualized needs of an increasingly diverse patient population in an effort to enhance patientnprovider communication across the entire continuum of care. It provides strategies for creating culturally appropriate written materials in plain language that patients can read and follow when they arrive home.

Nursing professionals can build upon the basic tools offered in the text throughout their career to stay abreast of methods to effectively communicate and educate a culturally and linguistically diverse demographic. Additionally, the material can easily be incorporated into course content regarding "unique populations" (pediatrics, older adults, research participants, and those managing mental health and end-of-life care decisions) for whom health literacy is often overlooked. The book will be valuable to undergraduate and graduate nursing students studying to meet advanced nurse practice competencies and is an essential resource for practicing nurses who must stay abreast of evolving standards and regulations related to the provision of safe and effective patient and family-centered care. Key Features:

Provides a solid foundation for developing skills that foster health literacy among all patients and practitioners Assists in meeting the regulatory requirements for providing culturally and linguistically appropriate patient education Includes guidelines for improving health literacy according to increasingly evolving regulatory standards Includes case-based examples to illustrate the purpose and effectiveness of enhancing patient and provider health literacy skills Addresses both oral and written communication strategies

Описание:

This book provides a comprehensive overview on the long-term care systems in 12 EU member states and Norway. Focusing on the legal background and its main principles, it includes a comparative analysis which highlights the principal dissimilarities between European long term care benefits, but at the same time also a variety of features in common. It also discusses the increasingly transnational dimension of long-term as a result of migrants returning to their country of origin in old age, and the still-unsolved legal problem of entitlement to long-term care benefits in another EU-member state.

Описание:

This authoritative reference examines in depth the myriad challenges facing pediatric cancer survivors and proposes a robust framework for structured follow-up of these patients through adulthood. Approaches to long-term follow-up include both established models of care and targeted models of lifelong surveillance of late effects by bodily systems and neurological outcomes. Sections devoted to quality of life and re-entry after treatment focus on key concerns such as health risk behaviors, school and career issues, psychological challenges, and care disparities. And a robust resources section adds extra usefulness to the expert coverage.

Among the Handbook's topics:

  • Developmental considerations in the transition from child and adolescent to adult survivorship.
  • Long-term follow-up roadmaps by disease and treatment.
  • Neuropsychological effects of pediatric brain tumors and associated treatment.
  • Building resiliency in childhood cancer survivors: a clinician's perspective.
  • School issues and educational strategies for survivors of childhood cancer.
  • Educating and preparing the childhood cancer survivor for long-term care: a curriculum model for cancer centers.

A work of rare scope, scholarship, and clinical acumen, the Handbook of Long-Term Care of the Childhood Cancer Survivor is a rewarding, practice-building resource essential to a wide range of healing professionals, including primary care physicians, pediatricians, oncologists, nurses, psychologists, neuropsychologists, child psychologists, and licensed therapists.
