Описание: Behind a cacophony of traffic noise, iPhone alerts and our ever-spinning thoughts, an elusive notion - silence - lies in wait. But what really is silence? Where can it be found? And why is it more important now than ever? Erling Kagge, the Norwegian adventurer and polymath, once spent fifty days walking solo in Antarctica with a broken radio. In this meditative, charming and surprisingly powerful book, he explores the power of silence and the importance of shutting out the world.

Описание: A transformative account of an experience that is essential for our sanity and our happiness.
There is a solution to the noise, distraction, ceaseless pings and alerts that undermine our patience and disturb our daily equilibrium: silence. What is silence? Where is it? How do we create it? These are the starting points for ErlingKagge's journey, an adventure that allows him to recount his own experiences (he once spent 50 days walking solo in Antarctica without radio contact) and to discuss the observations of other poets, artists, and explorers.
In this compact and astonishing meditation, Kagge explores the silence around us, the silence within us, and the silence each of us must create. He shows us the unexpected places where it sits--on the dance floor, in the shower, in the pause between musical notes, on a mossy rock--and how silence opens doors to wonder and gratitude. His book pulls you into its mystery.

Описание: By the early light of a bright summer morning, long, long ago, two small boats were seen to issue from one of the fiords or firths on the west coast of Norway, and row towards the skerries or low rocky islets that lay about a mile distant from the mainland. Although the morning was young, the sun was already high in the heavens, and brought out in glowing colours the varied characteristics of a mountain scene of unrivalled grandeur. The two shallops moved swiftly towards the islands, their oars shivering the liquid mirror of the sea, and producing almost the only sound that disturbed the universal stillness, for at that early hour Nature herself seemed buried in deep repose. A silvery mist hung over the water, through which the innumerable rocks and islands assumed fantastic shapes, and the more distant among them appeared as though they floated in air. A few seagulls rose startled from their nests, and sailed upwards with plaintive cries, as the keels of the boats grated on the rocks, and the men stepped out and hauled them up on the beach of one of the islets.

Описание: This book provides an in-depth examination of sawdust and its potential uses and hazards. In chapter one, Yaning Zhang, Bingxi Li, Haochun Zhang, Hongtao Li, Yijun Zhao, and Baocheng Jiang offer research on the exergy of (or maximum work obtainable by) sawdust. Next, Professor Augustine Uchechukwu Elinwa presents research on the potential use of sawdust as cement. In chapter three, Gabriela Nacu and Laura Bulgariu give a synopsis of the use of sawdust as a low-cost absorbent in the treatment of industrial wastewaters while also stressing the most significant benefits of its application. Following this, Redouane Ouafi, Zakia Rais, Mustapha Taleb, Mohamed Benabbou, and Meryem Asri further discuss the efficiency of using sawdust in the absorption of heavy-metals water pollution with the aim of relieving water stress. In closing, Mirjana Stajić, Jelena Vukojević, and Jasmina Ćilerdić look at the potential for sawdust to produce healthful foods and open the door for new species to be farmed commercially if used as a feedstock for food production.
