Описание: At the end of Opposite Worlds, the prequel to Italian Girls, Mary, Frank Walsh's wife, has left him, frustrated by his philandering ways and apparent infertility. Unlike Mary, Frank doesn't believe in marriage, nor does he believe in God any more, though like her he was brought up as a Catholic. He even spent nine years training to be a priest, an experience described in Ghosters, the first book in Frank's saga, and an experience that still haunts him. The beginning of Italian Girls finds Frank feeling liberated but lonely, as well as guilty about the break-up of his marriage. He tries to find solace in love affairs with his international students at the colleges in London and Dublin where he teaches English. Ironically, though, these affairs make him realise what he really wants is a wife and children after all. He has always had a thing for Italian girls, ever since a boyhood crush on Gina Lollobrigida, so when he falls in love with Cinzia, an Italian student, he thinks he has found the love of his life and the wife of his dreams. But has he? Or will his quest lead him to a different continent entirely ..?
Eugene Vesey was born and brought up in Manchester. He was educated at a Catholic grammar school in Manchester, Catholic seminaries in the English Lake District and Midlands and the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool. He has lived and worked as a teacher in London for nearly forty years.

Описание: "A truly invaluable collocation of documents. Highly Recommended."--Choice "Brilliantly conceptualized, exhaustively researched, and eloquently written, it is a gold mine for anyone interested in America's ongoing dilemma with slavery and race."--John Stauffer, author of Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln "This stunning and magisterial documentary history accumulates and analyzes much evidence never before considered adequately, if at all. The work of fifteen years by assiduous senior historians of slave rebellions, it not only considers the prehistory of the affair but also the long aftermath."--David Moltke-Hansen, editor of William Gilmore Simms's Unfinished Civil War: Consequences for a Southern Man of Letters "Will surely become the definitive source on the Vesey conspiracy. Such an impressive assemblage and explication of records show not only how Vesey's actions contributed to America's Civil War but also why he continues to influence us, particularly in the South."--Bernard E. Powers Jr., author of Black Charlestonians: A Social History, 1822-1885 "Places the Denmark Vesey conspiracy in a broad context. This volume should put to rest the argument by some historians that the conspiracy was little more than 'loose talk' among those held in bondage."--Loren Schweninger, author of Families in Crisis in the Old South: Divorce, Slavery, and the Law
In 1822, thirty-four slaves and their leader, a free black man named Denmark Vesey, were tried and executed for "attempting to raise an insurrection" in Charleston, South Carolina. In The Denmark Vesey Affair, Douglas Egerton and Robert Paquette annotate and interpret a vast collection of contemporary documents that illuminate and contextualize this complicated saga, ultimately arguing that the Vesey plot was one of the most sophisticated acts of collective slave resistance in the history of the United States. This is the definitive account of a landmark event that spurred the South to secession.

Frank Walsh is a young teacher of English to foreign students. While teaching on a summer school in Dublin, he falls in love with one of the students, a French girl called Danielle, and they embark on a passionate affair. Frank lives in London with Rania, a Guyanese girl who was also one of his students in the college where he teaches. They are married, but only in Muslim rites, as she is from a Muslim family. Frank is not religious, though he was once training to be a Catholic priest, and agreed to this only out of love for Rania, just as he agreed to marry his first wife, Mary, in a Catholic ceremony. Now though, he realises it was a big mistake, because Rania is not the girl he thought she was and their relationship is strained to breaking point. He sees Danielle as his escape until he meets Cinzia, his Italian ex, again and falls back in love with her. Which of the three women in his life will Frank choose? He can't quite bring himself to leave Rania and can't quite decide between Danielle and Cinzia. Then one morning a letter arrives from France ...
