Описание: Recent Yale philosophy grad and late-bloomer, Alice, wants to find a way to be close to her boyfriend in Paris, with enough space to sow a few oats. Rome fits, so off she goes. Her goals? To have some fun, find a muse, make art, start a life. Instead, she finds herself a muse to a series of men--a pushy TV-host dwarf, lonely banker, alcoholic playboy, bondage-obsessed prince, and the disillusioned Oscar-winning film director, Frank Colucci.

The middle-aged Frank is in Rome to film the last of his famed movie series. He isn't enjoying the job, and longs to get back to art films. He's agreed to do the film because he 'knows the formula and needs money'. Alice, still wandering Rome as lost and confused as the day she arrived the previous year, tumbles into Frank's life, and he hires her as his philosophy tutor.

Although at opposite poles of life with seemingly little in common--the bright but broke Alice is just getting started and has few prospects, and the married-with-kids wealthy Oscar-winner Frank disillusioned and ready to quit--the two form an instant bond. Both are lost and frustrated and not helped by forces around them--the huge over-budget and troubled movie, financial stress, Frank's grief, Alice's unrequited ambition, and each of their competing desires.

Thus, what should be the usual ugly spiral between an older, powerful man using his position to seduce a confused and lost young woman, instead becomes a sweet and simple friendship between two kindred spirits who touch each other's lives in the brief period they spend together.

Описание: Born during World War II, Marilee Eaves has long struggled to fit into the New Orleans elite--secret Mardi Gras societies that ruled the city--into which she was born. Then, as a student at Wellesley, she's hospitalized at McLean psychiatric hospital, where she begins to realize how much of herself she's sacrificed to blend into and be fully accepted by the exclusive and exclusionary white Uptown New Orleans culture to which she supposedly belongs. In Singing Out Loud, Eaves tells of her journey to stand on her own two feet--to find a way to be grounded and evolved in the midst of that culture. Along the way, she wrestles with bipolar disorder, alcoholism, and the effects of her bad (heartbreaking, and sometimes hilarious) choices. Raw and funny, this book offers hope and encouragement to willing to be vulnerable, address their issues, and laugh at themself in order to embrace who they truly are.

Описание: This book introduces the reader to the principles of assessment of student learning outcomes in the context of program review, and illustrates how to implement a sustainable outcomes-based assessment program review process based on over 30 case studies of exemplary practice across a range of institutional types. Since publication of the first edition just over a decade ago, the landscape of higher education has been transformed. With the emergence of competency-based education, the questioning of the value of a post-secondary degree, the explosion of neuroscientific research, the emphasis on metacognition, as well as demographic changes in who is going to college and why, new questions are being asked and new methods of collecting data have multiplied. This new edition retains the goals of the first, which is to inform institutional self-reflection of how well the organization is achieving its intended purpose, in a manner that is reflective, adaptive, and collaborative, but which recognizes today’s changed environment. Among the new topics Marilee Bresciani Ludvik introduces in this edition is how to appropriately connect outcomes-based program review (OBPR) to performance indicators and predictive analytics and develop meaningful new performance metrics to inform our understanding of the student experience. She also addresses the intersection of OBPR with competency-based assessment, introduces the reader to new concepts and terminology, and demonstrates the implications of neuroscientific research for learning and development and how that influences OBPR design. All the cases, a signature feature of the first edition to illustrate best practice, have been replaced for this edition. Marilee Bresciani Ludvik postulates the importance of developing institutions as learning organizations where OBPR is designed collaboratively between student services, academic services, business services professionals, and faculty. Each chapter concludes with key learning points as well as questions for organizational leadership to promote ongoing professional development as institutions implement OBPR practices that are appropriate for their specific contexts.

Описание:

Surprise adoptee, Grandfather was a coal picker in Scotland, at 29, and Chief Inspector of Mines for British Columbia, at 43. He had shared his date and place of birth, or so, it seemed. This genealogy embraces late 18th to early 20th Century, Scotland, with US implications.

His family is lovingly presented in "who done it," under evaluation, as his potential birth parents. His dearly departed are drawn to present, fulfilling adoptee yearn for natal truth. They join "missing person" searches, through crumbs laid long ago, in their records of life. Their whispered lifelines include a wrench; a same aged, unrelated, adopted cousin, awaiting discovery.

Old fashioned story weaving substitutes for DNA certainty, as eliminations ensue. The road to data discovery and conclusion is superimposed upon the narrative. Accuracy of selection is left to reader speculation, while threat of an undisclosed record of rebuttal, ever haunts. Author despair and triumph, over mighty data struggles, is disclosed throughout.

Ancestors meld facts into a family tale, consistent with the beloved man, Grandfather would become. They were genial people, with toil in the content of their day. They thread the needles that wove the fabric of Scotland, as the Industrial Revolution unfolded.
