Описание: Why does Jane Austen mania continue unabated in a postmodern world? How does the brilliant Regency novelist speak so personally to todays women that they view her as their best friend? Jane Austens Women answers these questions by exploring Austens affirming yet challenging vision of both who her dynamic female characters are, and who they become. This important new work analyzes the heroines relationships to body, mind, spirit, environment, and society. It reveals how, despite a restrictive patriarchal culture, these women achieve greatness. In clear, lively prose, Kathleen Anderson shares original theoretical insights from twenty years of studying Austen, and illuminates the novels as guidebooks on how to become an Austenian heroine in ones everyday life. This engaging book will appeal to a broad readership: the serious student, the general lit-lover, and the Austen neophyte alike.

Описание: First published in 1984, John Hardy`s important interpretation of Jane Austen`s heroines breaks through the accepted tradition of viewing the author as merely a rational comedienne of manners. He argues instead that Jane Austen`s greatness lies in her exploration of human relationships through the subtle and original portrayal of her heroines.

Описание: Jane Austen took a particular delight in the resonance of names, and in her novels she used the names of people and places as a potential source of meaning, satirical or historical. Margaret Doody s book is a learned and enjoyable investigation of this aspect of Austen s art. Doody tells us that Austen preferred first names in common and traditional English use, though these sometimes acquire a subtly new flavor in her works. Austen also favored the names of saints and of royalty, but she did use some classically derived pagan names, always with a purpose. And Austen would signal political loyalties and allegiances in her novels through the use of names, both first names and last names, as well as place names. In exploring Austen s names and their connotations, Doody has a larger point to make. By uncovering the riddling and punning in Austen s names, as well as Austen s interest in history, Doody casts Austen as a decidedly earthy writer steeped in the particulars of place and time, rather than a timeless novelist writing in an abstemious style. From this attention to names in her work emerges a picture of Austen that is both fuller than we ve had before, and controversial."

Описание: It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is one of the most popular novelists in the English language and that her work is more popular today than ever before. The wit and romance of her writing captivate television and cinema audiences worldwide, while boosting the readership of the novels themselves. "Jane Austen's World" gets to grip with the woman who is truly at the root of all this success - Jane Austen herself. This book reveals her private life and the world she inhabited, a time when England was developing into a colonial power, the French Revolution was raging and the Regency was taking hold. No other book truly captures the spirit of the writer, the romance of the age and the era in which she lived so beautifully and authoritatively.

Описание:

"Jane Austen's Families" discusses the fictional families - such as the Bennets and the Bertrams - whose dynamics are crucial both to Austen's plots and to her explorations of ethical complexities. The study focuses upon the central characters' interactions with their own families and (to a lesser extent) with other family groups in an exploration of how emotional and moral development is both hindered and fostered by these interactions. Significantly, Austen chooses not to write about the orphaned heroines so often preferred by novelists of the period; rather, for a writer who cares intensely for what is natural and probable in fiction, the most common early experience of surviving the pains and pleasures of family life provides the richest material for her work.

This study is historically grounded, reading Austen in the context of contemporary writing and visual culture in an exploration of her treatment of the relations between parent and child. It examines Austen's heroines as their parents' daughters, responding to and resisting their upbringing, and shows how family interactions shape their courtships. Inevitably this concern involves a consideration both of the ethics of parenthood and of the ethics these heroines acquire from their parents, through adaptation, imitation and resistance to what they are taught, directly and indirectly. Interactions between parent and child affect both the daughter's experience and her active moral life.
