Описание: This volume traces the topic of affect across Lyotard's corpus and accounts for Lyotard's crucial and original contribution to the thinking of affect. Highlighting the importance of affect in Lyotard's philosophy, this work offers a unique contribution to both affect theory and the reception of Lyotard.
Affect indeed traverses Lyotard's philosophical corpus in various ways and under various names: "figure+? or "the figural+? in Discourse, Figure, "unbound intensities+? in his "libidinal+? writings, "the feeling of the diffйrend+? in The Differend, "affect+? and "infantia+? in his later writings. Across the span of his work, Lyotard insisted on the intractability of affect, on what he would later call the "differend+? between affect and articulation. The singular awakening of sensibility, affect both traverses and escapes articulation, discourse, and representation. Lyotard devoted much of his attention to the analysis of this traversal of affect in and through articulation, its transpositions, translations, and transfers. This volume explores Lyotard's account of affect as it traverses the different fields encompassed by his writings (philosophy, the visual arts, the performing arts, literature, music, politics, psychoanalysis as well as technology and post-human studies).

Описание: Excerpt from An Eulogy Upon Cornelius Rea Agnew: Read Before the New York Academy of Medicine, June 7th, 1888 A generation may be likened to a caravan, which crosses a vast and arid desert, every member of which must surely fall exhausted by the way before the goal is reached, and leave his bones to whiten on the sands. As the doomed procession advances, one falls overcome by the heat of the sun; another exhausted from fatigue another succumbs to hunger and thirst another to disease contracted by exposure while others still fall victims to strife and contention with the wild tribes which hover along the route. In time, all must die some when everything is prosperous, and the journey young; some midway in the march; and some after bearing the burden, the trials, and the sorrows of the expedition, and after all their fellow travellers have fallen beside them. But fall when they may, all must die. What more natural than that their surviving comrades should study and consider the traits of character, the mental and physical attributes and the peculiar habits of each departing friend, in order that what was good in him might be copied, and that what was evil might be eschewed. Surely, to us, no custom can be fraught with greater promise of good than that which leads us thus to analyze the lives and characters of those who leave our ranks to take their places in those of another world. Exuberant Chinese-inspired drawing rooms, Persian-style boudoirs, bulbous Mogul domes, and Turkish smoking rooms were once the rage in avant-garde circles and are undergoing a resurgence in popularity today as the global economy brings attention to the styles of the Far East, India, and the Islamic world. Emmanuelle Gaillard and Marc Walter's lavish new book traces the Asian sources of this fashion, and its transformation in late 19th- and early 20th-century Western settings. Illustrated with extraordinary vintage and contemporary interior photography, fabrics, wallpapers, patterns, decorative objects, and costumes, this volume tours the houses of writers, thinkers, business tycoons, princesses, and even the Russian empress Catherine the Great. "Exotic Taste "is a rich treat for anyone drawn to the fantastic, elaborate style of Orientalism. Praise for "Exotic Taste: ""Beginning in the 18th century, European tastemakers, chafing under the constraints of classicism, turned to the exotic East, swooning over the intricate patterns and scenes and lush, sensual colors found in the arts of China, Japan, India, and the Arabic world. "Exotic Taste: Orientalist Interiors" examines the craze for all things Eastern that resulted in such anomalies as English country houses with onion domes and the tiled fantasia, complete with trickling fountain and pool, that the Victorian painter Lord Leighton build in his London home." -"Elle Decor"
