Описание: Excerpt from Proceedings of the New York Pathological Society for the Year 1888 The attempts to discover the cause of malarial disease are of considerable historical interest. From earliest times the existence of a contagium vivum has been generally assumed, by reason of the peculiar clinical features of the disease itself. Up to 1879 most of the hypotheses that were offered assumed that some one of the fresh-water alga was the exciting cause.l These observations were never confirmed, and obtained but little belief. The degeneration of the nerve fibres in the posterior root-zone of Flechsig no doubt explains the absence of the reflexes in these cases. In the alcoholic polyneuritis, the changes in the nerves could in themselves be sufficient to cause the loss of the reflexes, but the degenerations in the nerves are not so marked as the degenerations in the posterior root-zone of Flechsig.
