As the food is taken into the mouth and chewed, a liquid called saliva, or spittle, comes out from six small glands situated on each side of and below the mouth. This saliva not only moistens the food so that it can be easily swallowed, but it also acts upon the starchy parts turning them into sugar. This part of our food can then be melted in the stomach. The food is now ready to be swallowed, and is passed by the tongue and muscles of the mouth to the top of the gullet or food pipe, from whence it is carried downward a distance of about nine inches to the stomach.
