Описание:
From 1870 until after World War I, reformers led an effort to place children from orphanages, asylums, and childrens homes with farming families. The farmers received free labor in return for providing room and board. Reformers, meanwhile, believed children learned lessons in family life, citizenry, and work habits that institutions simply could not provide.

Drawing on institution records, correspondence from children and placement families, and state reports, Megan Birk scrutinizes how the farm system developed--and how the children involved may have become some of Americas last indentured laborers. Between 1850 and 1900, up to one-third of farm homes contained children from outside the family. Birk reveals how the nostalgia attached to misplaced perceptions about healthy, family-based labor masked the realities of abuse, overwork, and loveless upbringings endemic in the system. She also considers how rural people cared for their own children while being bombarded with dependents from elsewhere. Finally, Birk traces how the ills associated with rural placement eventually forced reformers to transition to a system of paid foster care, adoptions, and family preservation.

Описание: Nicole Harris didn't have many of the advantages enjoyed by other girls in the highly competitive world of junior tennis. She didn't have a private tennis court or the latest equipment, and her family certainly couldn't afford private coaching since her father passed away. Even paying entry fees to compete in weekend tournaments was a stretch. But the seventh grader had an ace in her pocket that money couldn't buy, and that was an unfailing belief in herself that overpowered any perceived challenges by the outside world. Fueled by the support of her family, friendships with other competitors and guidance from a surrogate father figure, Nicole would ride her positive attitude and passion for tennis to achievements she had only dreamed about."This book reinforces the need to believe in yourself and proves that in life, one must learn to adapt and play the ball regardless of the direction it bounces. Sport lovers of all ages will enjoy this book." - David C. Rogers - Tennis Professional, SportMinder Enterprises LLC

Описание: The year was 1963, and little Dodgeville High School captured the state of Wisconsin's imagination with an improbable run to the state championship game under Coach John "Weenie" Wilson. The hard-driving coach was on a mission to nurture and build a class of champions, building on his own background of being a highly accomplished athlete and motivator.Wilson took a group of gifted and dedicated student-athletes, indoctrinated with small-town values, and put them on a course that lifted the Dodgeville basketball program to undreamed-of heights. In an era when every school in Wisconsin competed in a single division, Dodgeville - with just 400 students - found itself matched up against schools more than four times its size as it made its state tournament run.Dodgeville would come up one victory short of the title in 1963, taking home the silver ball for the school's trophy case. However, Wilson and his players had no intention of being a one-hit wonder, and when the 1963-64 basketball season began, they had only one goal in mind: getting that gold ball. The Dodgers cruised through the regular season unbeaten and incredibly found themselves as one of the tournament favorites when they returned to Madison for the state finals. This time, against a vaunted Milwaukee North squad, the Dodgers would not be denied. Wisconsin had its own, real version of the Hoosiers story, and the Dodgeville Dodgers of 1964 had staked their claim to history.

Описание: Adam Evans always felt he was a little different, although he never could put his finger on exactly why. One thing was for certain: struggling with the paralyzing anxiety disorder known as agoraphobia didn't help matters any. There had to be more to this irrational fear than simple psychological malaise. In his quest to overcome this disability, Adam would delve deep into his own mind and discover a connection buried deep beneath generations of angst. He would learn more about himself - and the link to a dark chapter in American history - than he ever could have imagined.
