A preliminary examination of these plans showed that the arrange ments for the ventilation of this building were not good; also that the general arrangement of the underground sewers and drains and the termination of the soil pipes above the roof were not shown on the plans. It was, therefore, deemed advisable that the Sanitary Engineer of this Department visit the Eastern Michigan Asylum and confer with the authorities relative to needed changes in the plans. This was done, and several changes in the plans were decided upon, particularly in respect to the ventilation of the building and the better protection of the lower floor against dampness.

It is now proposed to warm the building mainly by direct radiation, and to provide for the introduction of fresh air in the east end ofthe building. The fresh air will be taken from a point somewhat above the grade level and will be tempered by steam coils located in a. Room beneath the stage. This tempered air will be forced into the audience room by a fan. The fresh-air registers are to be located on each side of the stage, and about six feet above the floor levels.
