Описание: In the United States, egg donation for reproduction and egg donation for research involve the same procedures, the same risks, and the same population of donors--disadvantaged women at the intersections of race and class. Yet cultural attitudes and state-level policies regarding egg donation are dramatically different depending on whether the donation is for reproduction or for research. Erin Heidt-Forsythe explores the ways that framing egg donation itself creates diverse politics in the United States, which, unlike other Western democracies, has no centralized method of regulating donations, relying instead on market forces and state legislatures to regulate egg donation and reproductive technologies.

Beginning with a history of scientific research around the human egg, the book connects historical debates about the "natural" (reproduction) and "unnatural" (research) uses of women's eggs to contemporary political regulation of egg donation. Examining egg donation in California, New York, Arizona, and Louisiana and coupled with original data on how egg donation has been regulated over the last twenty years, this book is the first comprehensive overview and analysis of the politics of egg donation across the United States.

Описание: It was the 1950's and Betty Crocker, Jell-O, and TV sitcoms idealizing the perfect family were all the rage. Unfortunately, they really didn't make us happy.

Roles for women were defined by making their families happy or appear happy at all costs. Women were expected to be the ideal caring mother, perfect homemaker and obedient wife, carrying out every wish of her husband. Girls were expected to play with dolls, be poised and ladylike, and without complaint be stand-in mothers.

This book is a firsthand account of what it was like growing up as a female in middle America during the 1950's and living a completely different reality than what society is telling you should have.

Imagine growing up with colorful dysfunctional characters none of whom matched the societal norms of the times. Your father is a verbal bully who evokes fear and silence among the children. Your mother is unable to cope with not meeting the expectations of the perfect marriage, descends into alcoholism, and sudden death. Add to this drama stressful financial conditions where even 5 cent sodas and 15 cent sundaes are a rarity. What would you do? How do you survive?

The author found the answers to these questions in the kindness of loving grandparents, her spiritual connection to the land and in breaking free by eloping at 19 to escape this family prison.
Forsythe provides a poignant narrative of the coercive expectations women faced during these years in a style that is intimate, lyrical, deeply moving, and at times humorous. Anyone interested in the 1950's, women's roles, and finding personal freedom will find this book a very satisfying read.

Описание:

"... His style of writing and converting real world situations into fiction is very impressive. As a former helicopter pilot and Vietnam Vet, I can honestly say it doesn't come across as fiction to me....

--Chuck Crabb, Colonel, USAF, Retired

In this second book in the TEACHER, SOLDIER, SPY trilogy, FORKS IN THE ROAD, First Lieutenant Williams is a Vietnamese language interpreter assigned to the Special Forces Green Beret camp near the Cambodian border in South Vietnam. The camp is overwhelmed by enemy artillery fire. Blasted out of his bunk in a near-miss, the Lieutenant is thrown several feet and loses consciousness. To survive, he must slide the length of the slit trench which leads to a tree-line and temporary safety. One-hundred-fifty meters of sewage stand between him and the freedom to fight another day.

"I crawled for what felt like a mile ... into the dark underbrush. Finally, I collided with the twisted roots of a huge tree and buried myself in the damp leaves accumulated at the roots. This moment would alter the course of my life forever." Follow Lieutenant Williams as he navigates the hazards of the war in Vietnam in 1965.

This book is the second, in the Teacher, Soldier, Spy trilogy that chronicles two wars: Vietnam and the Russian Afghan War. The other two books in the trilogy are The Operative: Escape from Saudi Arabia and the Afghan Bear Trap, set in Russia.
