Описание:

This is the first monograph in English on Horacio Quiroga (Uruguay 1878-Argentina 1936), a canonical author whose works are read by all advanced students of Spanish in the US and many other countries. The study examines Quiroga s work through the theoretical lens of the heroic a lens elaborated in part by means of Quiroga s own disquisitions on the subject and the complementary phenomenon of the monstrous. This lens serves to elucidate many evidently obscure and self-contradictory aspects of Quiroga s work and its relation to the context in which he lived. That context included the neo-colonial social and economic milieu of Argentina s fast-changing, immigrant-charged, increasingly materialistic society; the growing influence of foreign cultural discourses, particularly Hollywood film; the conflict between the genders in a society that embraced modernity but resisted changes in gender roles; the weight of new scientific discourses, especially Darwinian evolution, in social and political thought; and the impact on pedagogical theory and practice of these multiple changing discourses. This study discloses the extraordinary range of Quiroga s work, which includes erotic romance, science fiction and fantasy, psychological occult, social satire, a great variety of juvenile literature, outdoor adventure and most familiar to readers in the United States gothic and naturalist horror. The book concludes that Quiroga s consistent imperative of the heroic is essential to reconciling these various, evidently incompatible aspects of Quiroga s poetics, revealing its theoretical and ethical coherence."

Описание: This book explores the ways in which Ovid's poem, Metamorphoses, and Gabriel García Márquez's novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, use magical devices to construct their literary realities. The study examines in detail the similarities and differences of each author's style and investigates the impact of politics and culture upon the magical and frequently brutal realities the two authors create in their works. Ultimately the book is interested in the use of magical elements by authors in political climates where freedoms are being restricted, and by using magical realism to explore Ovid's Metamorphoses, it is able to illuminate aspects of the regime of emperor Augustus and the world of Ovid and demonstrate their closeness to that of García Márquez's Colombia. Lorna Robinson holds a PhD in Classics from University College London. She is the author of Cave Canem: A Miscellany of Latin Words and Phrases and the essay 'The Golden Age in Metamorphoses' and 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' in A Companion to Magical Realism (Tamesis, 2005).

Описание: As a mainstay of modern life, the media industry disseminates information about disability on a global scale. However, media outlets do not always contribute accurate and positive depictions of disability in print and on the screen. Since previous representations of disability have been incomplete, misguided, and unimaginative, our text encourages scholars and allies to refashion media so that it disrupts the status-quo and lends itself toward a more liberatory politics. Images from the media such as film, television, and social media are assessed using critical disabilities studies, media studies, cultural studies, and other interdisciplinary fields. Many of our authors suggest that media itself is a powerful force that can counter the stigma and misrepresentation that oppresses people with disabilities and perpetuates discrimination. Contributors explore new perspectives on disability including analyses of people with disabilities as producers, consumers, and product of media. Moreover, disability is expanded on through disability identity, culture, and intersections with other disciplines such as critical race theory, gender studies, and the other such viewpoints.

Описание: Liberal individualism, a foundational concept of American politics, assumes an essentially homogeneous population of independent citizens. When confronted with physical disability and the contradiction of seemingly unruly bodies, however, the public searches for a story that can make sense of the difference. The narrative that ensues makes ""abnormality"" an important part of the dialogue about what a genuine citizen is, though its role is concealed as an exception to the rule of individuality rather than a defining difference. Reading Embodied Citizenship brings disability to the forefront, illuminating its role in constituting what counts as U.S. citizenship.

Drawing from major figures in American literature, including Mark Twain, Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, and David Foster Wallace, as well as introducing texts from the emerging canon of disability studies, Emily Russell demonstrates the place of disability at the core of American ideals. The narratives prompted by the encounter between physical difference and the body politic require a new understanding of embodiment as a necessary conjunction of physical, textual, and social bodies. Russell examines literature to explore and unsettle long-held assumptions about American citizenship.
