Some chaplains cannot adjust to military life and would not readily respond to constructive supervision even under the most effective leadership. This problem in principle also is not uncommon in civilian ministries.

Large crowds are understandably gratifying. In many military situations they ought to be expected. A chaplain ought not cut himself off from the great majority of the personnel of his unit by narrow sympathies and exclusivist attitudes. If occasionally he must stand clearly in a minority position he must not indulge in self-pity and through a sense of rejection and offended pride deny himself the privilege of establishing a wholesome and redemptive bond with a small group of men who may need and want to look to him for religious and moral leadership.
