Описание:

The Frontal Lobes serves to update the reader on the latest thinking on the structure and function of the human frontal lobe. The frontal lobe controls the highest cognitive and social functions of humans, is the most evolved area of the human brain, is affected in many neurological disorders, and its functions are important to many aspects of social participation. It has been argued that a better understanding of our frontal lobes will enable humans to better manage and improve their continuing evolution over the coming centuries.

Sections of the volume address methodology; anatomy, physiology and pharmacology; function; development, aging and disorders; and rehabilitation. Patients with focal lesions in the frontal lobes have long been studied to reveal the organization and function of the frontal lobes. Over the last two decades, studies of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and developmental disorders have increased and led to new findings regarding the functions of the frontal lobes, and those studies are discussed in this volume. Additionally, although understanding of the frontal lobe historically relied on detailed neuroanatomical and clinical studies of damage, methods now include genetics and molecular biology; optogenetics; high-resolution structural and functional neuroimaging and electrophysiology with healthy volunteers as well as patients; advanced cognitive neuroscience methods; and new training and treatment regimes. All these new approaches are highlighted in this volume. Lastly, with new knowledge about the biology, structure and function of the frontal lobes, new treatment targets for pharmacology, non-invasive brain stimulation, and cognitive/social remediation have emerged. The last section of the volume presents these new efforts that will hopefully lead to better outcomes in patients with frontal lobe disorders.

  • Provides an overview of the structure, function, disorder and rehabilitation of the frontal lobes
  • Addresses a wide variety of methodologies - from genetics and molecular biology, to optogenetics and hi res fMRI, and more
  • Contains content of interest to advanced students, junior researchers and clinicians getting involved in research
  • Features the input of leaders in neuroanatomical research from around the globe - the broadest, most expert coverage available

Описание: The frontal lobes, which constitute about one-third of the entire cerebral cortex, have long fascinated scientific explorers of human behaviour. There are multiple reasons for this: the frontal lobes are the most recently evolved parts of the brain of Homo sapiens and can be viewed as the executive centre of the entire nervous system, subserving the key function of goal-oriented behaviour and reconciling internal emotional states with the demands of the external environment. This book presents some of the latest research on the structure and functional role of the frontal lobes, as revealed by both physiological and pathological studies. This timely and comprehensive volume exemplifies that only a truly multidisciplinary and collaborative effort from the allied disciplines of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology, neuroimaging, neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry will result in a better understanding of the wide-reaching implications of frontal lobe dysfunction.

Описание:

The Parietal Lobe, Volume 146, the latest release from the Handbook of Clinical Neurology series, provides a foundation in the neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and clinical neurology/neuropsychology of the parietal lobe that is not only applicable to both basic researchers and clinicians, but also to students and specialists who are interested in learning more disorders brought on by damage or dysfunction.

Topics encompass the evolution, anatomy, connections, and neurophysiology, the major neurological and neuropsychological deficits and syndromes caused by damage, the potential for improvement via transcranial stimulation and the role of the parietal in the cerebral networks for perception and action. Coverage ranges from neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, to clinical neurology and neuropsychology.

  • Provides a broad overview of the neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and clinical neurology of this region of the cortex
  • Offers additional insights regarding the role of the parietal in the cerebral networks for perception and action
  • Addresses the most frequent complications associated with damage, including somatosensory, perceptual, language, and memory, deficits, pain, optic ataxia, spatial neglect, apraxia, and more
  • Edited work with chapters authored by global leaders in the field
  • Presents the broadest, most expert coverage available

Описание: Pharmacoresistent or medically intractable epilepsy remains a challenge for those who are involved with the care of patients who suffer from this problem. Many of these patients have epilepsy originating in the temporal lobe. Surgical intervention still remains a therapeutic option for many of these individuals with variable success rates. The focus of this text is to review some of the underlying pathologic findings encountered in patients with medically intractable epilepsy who undergo the surgical resection of the epileptogenic focus. The research efforts in this arena have been considerable in recent years and have resulted in classification schemas of entities such as focal cortical dysplasia, hippocampal sclerosis and brain tumors that are being employed internationally. The chapters in this text explore in some detail some of the more commonly encountered pathologic findings in tissues resected in this population of patients. A review of current classification schemas and some of the limitations associated with such schemas are explored. Among the topics that will specifically be examined in this text are the more commonly encountered etiologies including hippocampal sclerosis, the focal cortical dysplasias as well as other developmental anomalies, glioneuronal tumors and vascular lesions.

Описание: Seized is a narrative portrait of a common brain disorder that can alter personality, illuminating the mind-body problem and the limits of free will. An invaluable resource for anyone touched by epilepsy, Seized gives first-hand accounts of three ordinary patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), explaining what they suffer and how they cope. The book also tells the stories of creative luminaries diagnosed with or suspected of having TLE, including van Gogh, Dostoevsky, Lewis Carroll, Saint Paul, and Flaubert. The psychological implications of Seized are, according to Publishers Weekly, "staggering." Kirkus Reviews called the book "Fascinating . . . LaPlante's descriptions of the human brain are wonderfully concrete, her historical research is well presented, and her empathy for TLE's victims is clear." In this "fascinating account of medical research," Howard Gardner noted, "LaPlante shows how a brain scar may cause bizarre aggressive or sexual behavior--and works of profound creative imagination."
