Описание:

A sweeping chronicle of women’s battles for reproductive freedom
Reproductive politics in the United States has always been about who has the power to decide—lawmakers, the courts, clergy, physicians, or the woman herself. Authorities have rarely put women’s needs and interests at the center of these debates. Instead, they have created reproductive laws and policies to solve a variety of social and political problems, with outcomes that affect the lives of different groups of women differently.
Reproductive politics were at play when slaveholders devised “breeding” schemes, when the US government took indigenous children from their families in the nineteenth century, and when doctors pressured Latina women to be sterilized in the 1970s. Tracing the main plot lines of women’s reproductive lives, the leading historian Rickie Solinger redefines the idea of reproductive freedom, putting race and class at the center of the effort to control sex and pregnancy in America over time.
Revisiting these issues after more than a decade, this revised edition of Pregnancy and Power reveals how far the reproductive justice movement has come, and the renewed struggles it faces in the present moment. Even after nearly a half-century of “reproductive rights,” a cascade of new laws and policies limits access and prescribes punishments for many people trying to make their own reproductive decisions. In this edition, Solinger traces the contemporary rise of reproductive consumerism and the politics of “free market” health care as economic inequality continues to expand in the US, revealing the profound limits of “choice” and the continued need for the reproductive justice framework.

"One of the most intriguing, idiosyncratic vocalists of our time." --USA Today

One weekend night on primetime television, a then-unknown singer and vital part of the burgeoning Los Angeles jazz pop scene skyrocketed to fame overnight after a now iconic performance on Saturday Night Live. The year was 1979, the song "Chuck E's in Love, and the singer, donning her trademark red beret, was the soon to be pronounced "Duchess of Coolsville" (Time), Rickie Lee Jones.

Rickie Lee Jones: The Jazz Side of Life is the first ever no-holds-barred account of the life of one of rock's hardest working women in her own words. With candor and lyricism Rickie Lee Jones takes us on the journey of her exceptional life: from her nomadic childhood as the granddaughter of vaudevillian performers, to her father's abandonment of the family and her years as a teenage runaway, her beginnings at LA's Troubador club, to her tumultuous (and private) relationship with Tom Waits, her battle with drugs, motherhood as a touring artist, and longevity as a woman in rock and roll.

Including never-before-told stories and accounts of the music business as she's lived it, and illustrated with stunning personal photos, this is an indispensable chronicle of one of rock's strongest women, an innovative music icon who was listed at number 30 on VH1's "100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll," has graced the cover of Rolling Stone twice, and who has been a major influence on contemporary popular music.

Описание: This 25th anniversary edition places abortion politics in the context of reproductive justice today and explains why abortion has been--and remains--a political flashpoint in the United States.

Prior to Roe v. Wade, hundreds of thousands of illegal abortions occurred in the United States every year. Rickie Solinger shares the story of Ruth Barnett, an abortionist in Portland, Oregon, between 1918 and 1968 to demonstrate that it was the law, not so-called back-alley practitioners, that most endangered women's lives in the years before abortion was legal. Women from all walks of life came to Barnett to seek abortions, who worked in a proper office, undisturbed by legal authorities, and never losing a patient. But in the anti-abortion fervor of the post-World War II era, Barnett and other practitioners were hounded by police and became convenient targets for politicians, forcing desperate women to use abortion syndicates run by racketeers or self-induced methods that often ended in serious injury or death. Solinger makes vivid use of newspaper accounts and extant legal transcripts to document how, throughout the country, laws were used to persecute competent abortion practitioners.

This 25th anniversary edition clarifies why the cultural and political meanings of abortion have remained surprisingly static despite the status of women changing so dramatically since Barnett and Roe v. Wade. And as attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade continue, The Abortionist is an instructive reminder of the vigilance necessary to protect both women and those who provide them with the freedom to decide for themselves what is best for their own health.
