Описание:

This beautiful book charts the development of the circus as an art form around the world, from antiquity to the present day.

Using over 200 circus related artworks from the French National Library's private collections, celebrated cultural historian Pascal Jacob tells the story of travelling entertainers and their art and trade. From nomadic animal tamers of the Dark Ages to European jugglers and acrobats of the 1800s, from the use of the circus as Soviet propaganda to the 20th-century Chinese performance art renaissance, this is an exhaustive history with a uniquely international scope.

Jacob draws on both rare and famous artworks, including prints dating from the 13th century, and paintings by Picasso and Dor . In doing so he demonstrates the circus to be a visual and physical masterpiece, constantly moving and evolving, and just as exciting an experience for audiences now as it was 1,000 years ago.

Описание: Winner of Best Performance Design and Scenography Publication Award, Prague Quadrennial 2019This beautifully illustrated book conveys the centrality of costume to live performance. Finding associations between contemporary practices and historical manifestations, costume is explored in six thematic chapters, examining the transformative ritual of costuming; choruses as reflective of society; the grotesque, transgressive costume; the female sublime as emancipation; costume as sculptural art in motion; and the here-and-now as history. Viewing the material costume as a crucial aspect in the preparation, presentation and reception of live performance, the book brings together costumed performances through history. These range from ancient Greece to modern experimental productions, from medieval theatre to modernist dance, from the ‘fashion plays’ to contemporary Shakespeare, marking developments in both culture and performance. Revealing the relationship between dress, the body and human existence, and acknowledging a global as well as an Anglo and Eurocentric perspective, this book shows costume’s ability to cross both geographical and disciplinary borders. Through it, we come to question the extent to which the material costume actually co-authors the performance itself, speaking of embodied histories, states of being and never-before imagined futures, which come to life in the temporary space of the performance. Описание:

An Inconvenient Black History of British Musical Theatre: 1900 - 1950 makes a radical and vital intervention in this established history of British musical theatre. It records how Black performance and creative practice was a significant force in the British musical theatre industry and disrupts established ideas that Black British performance practice starts after the arrival of the Windrush in 1948.

Through original research and investigation this book draws together threads from existing work in histories of popular music alongside significant archival work and framing of newly digitised newspapers, theatrical newspapers and magazines, and genealogical records. It makes two overarching arguments; firstly, that Black performance practice was a vital and significant part of the history of British musical theatre with an extraordinary impact on the development of the form; and secondly, that this was inherently a resistant practice on the part of hundreds, of practitioners of African descent, whose backgrounds reflect the breadth of the African diaspora.

Through considering the presence of, and relationships between, African American, Caribbean and Black British performers and creative producers, this book reinstates the work of hundreds of practitioners by focusing on a close reading of twelve key figures who made musicals theatre in the UK.

From Mabel Mercer, Johnny Nit, Pip Graham and Gordon Stretton to Frank Weaver, Alberta Hunter, and Clarence "Buddy" Bradley, it shows how Black composers, musicians, performers and choreographers with a variety of heritages and national identities played a central role in reshaping the form from Edwardian musical comedy into the age of modernism and beyond. Many of their names or works are not included in histories of the British musical. This book exposes this inconvenient history.

Описание:

'Actors always talk about what the audience does. I don't understand, we are just sitting here.'

Audience as Performer proposes that in the theatre, there are two troupes of performers: the actors and the audience. Although academics have scrutinised how audiences respond, make meaning and co-create while watching a performance, little research has considered the behaviour of the theatre audience as a performance in and of itself.

This insightful book describes how an audience performs through its myriad gestural, vocal and paralingual actions, and considers the following questions:

  • If the audience are performers, who are their audiences?
  • How have audiences' roles changed throughout history?
  • How do talkbacks and technology influence the audience's role as critics?
  • What influence does the audience have on the creation of community in theatre?
  • How can the audience function as both consumer and co-creator?

Drawing from over 140 interviews with audience members, actors and ushers in the UK, USA and Austrialia, Heim reveals the lived experience of audience members at the theatrical event. It is a fresh reading of mainstream audiences' activities, bringing their voices to the fore and exploring their emerging new roles in the theatre of the Twenty-First Century.

Pompeii in the Visual and Performing Arts: Its Reception in Spain and America

Описание: This volume examines the influence that Pompeii and, to a lesser extent, Herculaneum had on the visual and performing arts in Spain and countries across South America. Covering topics from architecture, painting and decorative arts to theatre, dance and photography, the reader will gain insight into the reception of classical antiquity through the analysis of the close cultural ties between both sides of the Atlantic, in the past and the present. Each contribution has been written by a specialist researcher participating in the project, 'The Reception and Influence of Pompeii and Herculaneum in Spain and Ibero-America', funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PGC2018-093509-B-I00 Ministry of Science and Innovation/AEI/ERDF/EU).

Pompeii in the Visual and Performing Arts begins by examining the influence of Pompeiian architecture in Spain in paintings that depict scenes inspired by Roman scenes and also buildings modelled on those of Pompeii. Next, the influence of Pompeii crosses the Atlantic to Mexico with a study of the archaeological site's influence on the visual and performing arts. An exploration of the elitist use of the ancient past in architecture is seen in Chilean architecture, which leads onto an investigation of the new art styles that emerged in the 19th century.

Later chapters look into the influence of the ancient frescoes and the use of modern plaster casts of statues. The final chapters are devoted to comics and photography, which also make a study of the places in Latin America nicknamed 'Pompeii' in the 20th and 21st centuries.
