Описание: Psychologists are increasingly interested in embodiment based on the assumption that thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are grounded in bodily interaction with the environment. Human is a being that possesses body and mind, and as such makes his decisions in line with the state of his mind, and for this reason, this piece, has further expanded the nature, meaning, attribute, and the place of the mind in human existence. This piece makes use of analogies in order to make the work more appreciable by the reader. Discussion over the mind-body relationship is not a new occurrence in philosophy as an academic field of study, hence the many complexities associated with the subject. Various philosophers posit various views about the mind-body relationship. In ancient philosophy, mind and body formed one of the classic dualism, and many philosophers including Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza and Rene Descartes, have written explicitly about this subject, and others like the pre-Socratic philosophers have written treatises that could easily be applied to the discourse of the mind-body relationship. The mind is an essential part of human existence. In fact, complete humanity consists in the presence of the mind. The presence of the mind as such, in human existence does not mean that the mind is materially existent neither does it mean that the mind is an eternal entity, which affects or determines the body, instead the mind is an immaterial entity which reveals itself in many immaterial ways, hence, its attributes, and is immaterially present as far as the body lives. In others words, the mind cease to exist once the body dies. In more words by extension the mind cannot exist independent of the body. This book focuses upon the affective capacities of bodies, human and non-human as well as addressing the challenges of the affective turn within social sciences. It examines how embodiment is used in social psychology, and explores the ways in which embodied approaches enrich traditional theories. Although research in this area is burgeoning, much of it has been more descriptive than explanatory. This Compilation discusses the immaterial body across the neurosciences, physiology, media and cultural studies, body-studies, artwork, performance, psychology and psychoanalysis.

It does so by examining the effect of cybercultures upon the contemporary articulation of phenomena as diverse as bodily experience, memory, the imagination, history, political participation, the nature of community, artistic creativity, and the instability of rhetoric, language and meaning.

Описание:

Daniel O'Quinn investigates the complex interpersonal, political, and aesthetic relationships between Europeans and Ottomans in the long eighteenth century. Bookmarking his analysis with the conflict leading to the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz on one end and the 1815 bid for Greek independence on the other, he follows the fortunes of notable British, Dutch, and French diplomats to the Sublime Porte of the Ottoman Empire as they lived and worked according to the capitulations surrendered to the Sultan.
Closely reading a mixed archive of drawings, maps, letters, dispatches, memoirs, travel narratives, engraved books, paintings, poems, and architecture, O'Quinn demonstrates the extent to which the Ottoman state was not only the subject of historical curiosity in Europe but also a key foil against which Western theories of governance were articulated. Juxtaposing narrative accounts of diplomatic life in Constantinople, such as those contained in the letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, wife of the English ambassador, with visual depictions such as those of the costumes of the Ottoman elite produced by the French-Flemish painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour, he traces the dissemination of European representations and interpretations of the Ottoman Empire throughout eighteenth-century material culture.
In a series of eight interlocking chapters, O'Quinn presents sustained and detailed case studies of particular objects, personalities, and historical contexts, framing intercultural encounters between East and West through a set of key concerns: translation, mediation, sociability, and hospitality. Richly illustrated and provocatively argued, Engaging the Ottoman Empire demonstrates that study of the Ottoman world is vital to understanding European modernity.

Focusing on the questions of transculturality and reception, the book looks at the ways in which such memories are being shared, debated and received by museum workers, artists, politicians and general audiences. Making the Modern Reader: Cultural Mediation in Early Modern Literary Anthologies

Описание:

Inquiring into the formation of a literary canon during the Restoration and the eighteenth century, Barbara Benedict poses the question, "Do anthologies reflect or shape contemporary literary taste?" She finds that there was a cultural dialectic at work: miscellanies and anthologies transmitted particular tastes while in turn being influenced by the larger culture they helped to create. Benedict reveals how anthologies of the time often created a consensus of literary and aesthetic values by providing a bridge between the tastes of authors, editors, printers, booksellers, and readers.

Making the Modern Reader, the first full treatment of the early modern anthology, is in part a history of the London printing trade as well as of the professionalization of criticism. Benedict thoroughly documents the historical redefinition of the reader: once a member of a communal literary culture, the reader became private and introspective, morally and culturally shaped by choices in reading. She argues that eighteenth-century collections promised the reader that culture could be acquired through the absorption of literary values. This process of cultural education appealed to a middle class seeking to become discriminating consumers of art.

By addressing this neglected genre, Benedict contributes a new perspective on the tension between popular and high culture, between the common reader and the elite. This book will interest scholars working in cultural studies and those studying noncanonical texts as well as eighteenth-century literature in general.
