Описание: The trafficking of human beings is a major worldwide problem. Due to the scarcity, unreliability and non-comparability of existing data in the various affected countries there are serious difficulties related to the development of a comprehensive counter-strategy. Although there has been some improvement in the last years, the statistics on human trafficking that are available internationally are still highly unsatisfactory. There is an urgent need for a structured system to monitor this crime, a system that assesses and quantifies the illegal activity and provides the same set of quantitative and qualitative data for different countries. It should also registrate the level of response and the compliance to the requests set by the United Nations in their Protocol on trafficking in human beings. A body of information of this kind would yield profound knowledge on the problems and circumstances of people involved in the trade. The data could then be analysed with the overall goal of devising new solutions at both the national and supranational levels. In the light of the above-mentioned issues, this book starts with analysing various definitions used and thereafter the complexity of phenomena that impair the collection and comparability of data on human trafficking. Finally different approaches, both quantitative and qualitative are compared and discussed, with the aim of coming to an effective monitoring system.

Every year, thousands of Chinese women travel to Asia and the United States in order to engage in commercial sex work. In Selling Sex Overseas, Ko-lin Chin and James Finckenauer challenge the current sex trafficking paradigm that considers all sex workers as victims, or sexual slaves, and as unwilling participants in the world of commercial sex. Bringing to life an on-the-ground portrait of this usually hidden world, Chin and Finckenauer provide a detailed look at all of its participants: sex workers, pimps, agents, mommies, escort agency owners, brothel owners, and drivers. Ultimately, they probe the social, economic, and political organization of prostitution and sex trafficking, contradicting many of the ‘moral crusaders’ of the human trafficking world.

Описание: This book is part of a two-volume set that examines prostitution and sex trafficking on a global scale, with each chapter devoted to a particular country in one of seven geo-cultural areas of the world. The 16 chapters in this volume (Volume II) are devoted to examination of the commercial sex industry (CSI) in countries within Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Oceania, while the 18 chapters comprising Volume I focus exclusively on Europe, Latin America, and North America. This volume also includes a "global" section, which includes chapters that are globally relevant - rather than those devoted to a particular country or geographic location. The content of each Volume, as well as each chapter, reflects great diversity - diversity in focus, writing style, and personal position regarding the commercial sex industry. Diversity extends to the contributors, who are comprised of international scholars, service providers, and policy advocates representing a variety of fields and disciplines, with distinct and varied frames of reference and theoretical underpinnings with regard to the commercial sex industry. In addition to addressing aspects of the CSI across the globe, as impacted by geography and culture, authors have also provided a spectrum of implications of their work - implications ranging from continued scholarship and research, to legislative maneuvers and policy change, to suggestions for collaboration across NGOS, fieldworkers, clinicians, and service providers. Together, the 34 expertly-crafted chapters provide a wealth of knowledge from which to more deeply appreciate and contemplate the global commercial sex industry. By uniting contributors from around the world, this book aims to build a relatively common knowledge base on global prostitution and sex trafficking.

Trafficking in human beings (THB) has been described as modern slavery. It is a serious criminal activity that has significant ramifications for the human rights of the victims. It poses major challenges to the state, society and individual victims. THB is not a static given but a constantly changing concept depending on societal changes and opinions, economic situations and legal developments. THB occurs both transnationally and within countries. The complexity of THB is such that it requires a wide range of expertise fully to address the phenomenon.
Edited by a team of leading international academics, The Routledge Handbook of Human Trafficking will provide an interdisciplinary introduction to (THB). It is aimed at academics, students, research universities and non-governmental organisations, as well as policy makers. It will review THB through the lens of law, anthropology, social and political science and will address statistical, data protection issues and showcase the most effective research methods, analyse the various actors and stakeholders and the different types of exploitation of trafficked persons. It will critically highlight and analyse the most pressing current challenges posed by THB.
