Описание:

In San Francisco, the St. James Infirmary (SJI) and the California Prostitutes Education Project (CAL-PEP) provide free, nonjudgmental medical care, counseling, and other health and social services by and for sex workers—a radical political commitment at odds with government policies that criminalize prostitution. To maintain and expand these much-needed services and to qualify for funding from state, federal, and local authorities, such organizations must comply with federal and state regulations for nonprofits. In Sex Work Politics, Samantha Majic investigates the way nonprofit organizations negotiate their governmental obligations while maintaining their commitment to outreach and advocacy for sex workers' rights as well as broader sociopolitical change.
Drawing on multimethod qualitative research, Majic outlines the strategies that CAL-PEP and SJI employ to balance the conflicting demands of service and advocacy, which include treating sex work as labor with legitimate occupational health and safety concerns, empowering their clients with civic skills to advance their political commitments outside the nonprofit organization, and conducting and publishing research and analysis to inform the public and policymakers of their constituents' needs. Challenging the assumption that activists must "sell out" and abandon radical politics to manage formal organizations, Majic comes to the surprising conclusion that it is indeed possible to maintain effective advocacy and key social movement values, beliefs, and practices, even while partnering with government agencies. Sex Work Politics significantly contributes to studies of transformational politics with its nuanced portrait of nonprofits as centers capable of sustaining political and social change.

Описание:

Are sex workers victims, criminals, or just trying to make a living? Over the last five years, public policy and academic discourse have moved from criminalization of sex workers to victim-based understanding, shaped by human trafficking. While most research focuses on macro-level policies and theories, less is known about the on-the-ground perspectives of people whose lives are impacted by sex work, including attorneys, social workers, police officers, probation officers, and sex workers themselves.

Challenging Perspectives on Street-Based Sex Work brings the voices of lower-echelon sex workers and those individuals charged with policy development and enforcement into conversation with one another. Chapters highlight some of the current approaches to sex work, such as diversion courts, trafficking task forces, law enforcement assisted diversion and decriminalization. It also examines how sex workers navigate seldom-discussed social phenomenon like gentrification, pregnancy, imperialism, and being subjects of research. Through dialogue, our authors reveal the complex reality of engaging in and regulating sex work in the United States and through American aid abroad.

Contributors include: Aneesa A. Описание:

While street prostitutes comprise only a small minority of sex workers, they have the highest rates of physical
and sexual abuse, arrest and incarceration, drug addiction, and stigmatization, which stem from both their public visibility and their dangerous work settings. Exiting the trade can be a daunting task for street prostitutes; despite this, many do try at some point to leave sex work behind. Focusing on four different
organizations based in Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Hartford that help prostitutes get off the streets, Sharon S. Oselin’s Leaving Prostitution explores the difficulties, rewards, and public responses to
female street prostitutes’ transition out of sex work.
Through in-depth interviews and field research with street-level sex workers, Oselin illuminates their pathways into the trade and their experiences while in it, and the host of organizational, social, and individual factors that influence whether they are able to stop working as prostitutes altogether. She also speaks to staff at
organizations that aid street prostitutes, and assesses the techniques they use to help these women develop self-esteem, healthy relationships with family and community, and workplace skills. Oselin paints a full picture of the difficulties these women face in moving away from sex work and the approaches that do and do not work to help them transform their lives. Further, she offers recommendations to help improve the quality of life for these women. A powerful ethnographic account, Leaving Prostitution provides an essential understanding of getting out and staying out of sex work.

Описание: Symbiosis in nature is the interaction between two distinct species looking to forge closer long-term relationships. There are three types of interactions; "Mutualism" (honey bees and flowers for example, where both species benefit), "Commensalism" (A bird`s nest on a tree for example, where one species benefits whilst the other is not harmed) and "Parasitism" (humans and mosquitoes for example, where one species benefits and the other is harmed). Symbiotic, human to human interactions seek to form closer long-term relationships based on "Mutualism", the type of interaction where there is mutual benefit. In the business context, symbiosis happens when key stakeholders collaborate as true partners (not adversaries) for mutual benefit. Assets exist to provide value to the organization and its stakeholders. The hotel asset owner through his representative interacts with the hotel brand operator to create value; find improvements, find opportunities. This book primarily looks at hospitality management, key relationships and the complex operational dynamics between two key stakeholders; hotel asset owners and their branded hotel operators focusing on five key principles and a symbiotic leadership approach as a key enabler. There is a lot of room for improvement and it is this crucial relationship that is examined. This guidebook has been written for hotel brand operators, hotel asset owners and their representatives who are managing, overseeing or monitoring a business venture for themselves or on behalf of others. It is also a valuable guide for students of hospitality as well as the curious layman - anyone who has stayed in a hotel.
