Описание:

This book provides a comprehensive insight into the multilayered effects experienced by directly affected victims and their indirectly affected family members following terrorist incidents and other world disasters. Chapters draw primarily on interviews with fifty victims of the Bali bombings, but also consider terrorist incidents including the London and Boston bombings, and disasters such as the Boxing Day tsunami and the Fukusima nuclear disaster.

The book provides a detailed exploration of experiences and perceptions of those involved in the traumatic events, as well as their families, emergency response teams and community volunteers. Chapters discuss community responses to major incidents, appropriate non-medical models of intervention and vulnerable groups that may require special attention. The findings and analysis presented contribute to our understanding of the multilayered effects of terrorism on victims of all levels, and the importance of a planned and informed response, which includes the local community and its wealth of pre-existing resources.

Terrorism, Trauma and Psychology: A multilevel victim perspective of the Bali bombing will be key reading for researchers and academics in the fields of social and clinical psychology, as well as scholars of victimology and terrorism studies.

Описание:

As seen in military documents, medical journals, novels, films, television shows, and memoirs, soldiers’ invisible wounds are not innate cracks in individual psyches that break under the stress of war. Instead, the generation of weary warriors is caught up in wider social and political networks and institutions—families, activist groups, government bureaucracies, welfare state programs—mediated through a military hierarchy, psychiatry rooted in mind-body sciences, and various cultural constructs of masculinity. This book offers a history of military psychiatry from the American Civil War to the latest Afghanistan conflict. The authors trace the effects of power and knowledge in relation to the emotional and psychological trauma that shapes soldiers’ bodies, minds, and souls, developing an extensive account of the emergence, diagnosis, and treatment of soldiers’ invisible wounds.

Emerging Adults and Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Developmental Considerations and Innovative Approaches

Автор: Smith Douglas C.
Название: Emerging Adults and Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Developmental Considerations and Innovative Approaches

Описание: Emerging Adults and Substance Use Disorder Treatment addresses how a societal shift in the timing of developmental tasks affects treatment outcomes for substance use disorders, which are among the most highly prevalent and costly mental health problems in the United States. It presents readers
with a summary of the developmental period of emerging adulthood as well as a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art substance use disorder treatments for this group.

There are an estimated 30.6 million emerging adults living in the US, and as many as 34.5% of them have serious problems with substances that often require clinical treatments. That equates to 10.5 million emerging adults ages 18-25 in the United States with a substance use disorder. However,
research on substance use disorder treatments for emerging adults lags behind that for adolescents and older adults. This book fills a gap for academic audiences on this important and up-and-coming area of research. The first half of this volume address developmental issues associated with emerging
adulthood, paying specific attention to how developmental features influence diagnosis and treatment. The second half of the book presents the state-of-the-science on interventions for emerging adults, with each chapter summarizing either a body of work on a particular type of intervention or a
special topic affecting intervention delivery to emerging adults.

Описание: Ideally a resource for clinicians and therapists, this book describes the value of using a psychoanalytic theoretical framework to explore and understand behavioural disturbance in patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It blends both theoretical and practical treatment considerations in working with BPD, using detailed case study presentations to demonstrate this material. It also provides a description of diagnostic procedures and the importance of recognising the transference relationship with patients diagnosed with this disorder. The psychoanalytic framework of moral masochism by Freud (1924/1961) is used to explore the unconscious function of deliberate self-harm behaviours. Case illustrations are offered to highlight the process by which to understand the patients unconscious responses throughout treatment, and to appreciate the patients experience of clinical care when a consideration of these unconscious processes is disregarded or not adequately acknowledged. Specific discussion is then offered on appreciating the role of the clinician in the therapeutic alliance in terms of the patients prognosis. The role of the transference in the repetition of the patients trauma, and therefore the occurrence of recurrent deliberate self-harm episodes during treatment, is then considered in detail.

Описание: Trapped in his living room between his gun-toting father and his butcher-knife-wielding mother, eight year-old Howard Lovely stood in horror as his father pulled the trigger. Amazingly, no one died. But something happened inside of Howard that would take more than thirty years to begin to reverse. Howard's horror caused a major disruption in the young boy's brain processing that led to what is labeled in the DSM-IV-TR as post-traumatic stress disorder, a mental health condition faced by approximately 5.2 million Americans each year. Howard and others like him suffer from a series of painful and far-reaching psychological, social, and physical effects as a result of having witnessed or experienced violence. From the moment of this trauma, Howard seemed to walk through life upside down. A neighborhood kid yelling to another would make his body feel under attack. The beep of a car horn would hop him up on adrenaline. The sound of a dog barking would send his heartbeat racing into full PTSD mode. Howard figured that if he could just get away from the screaming and hitting at home, everything would start to be okay. But when he enlisted in the air force, Howard's body and mind took off again, racing down an everlasting rollercoaster of PTSD attacks. Howard would suffer through three hospitalizations in psych wards, fourteen out of twenty years in a jobless state, and countless doctor and therapy visits. In the end, he took a gamble on a treatment he had read about: eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, also known as EMDR. That gamble gave him a renewed opportunity at life. This is his unforgettable story into the war raging inside his head and finally back to peace. Out of the Silence takes readers inside the complicated mind of a victim of PTSD and how each can reclaim his or her life.

Описание: This book explores the links between education policy and occurrences of civil disorder and domestic terrorism in England and France. Since 2001, both England and France have experienced outbreaks of rioting in which young people of immigrant origin have been implicated: both have also been the targets of domestic terror attacks perpetrated by their own citizens. Both countries have had similar experiences of immigration since the end of the Second World War, but they are considered to have taken divergent approaches to immigrant integration and education. While Britain has tended towards a multicultural race relations approach, France veers towards a Republican assimilationist approach. Through the analysis of policy discourse and documents, the authors seek to establish whether these distinct approaches to immigrant integration and education policy have been maintained or whether they are converging. This book will appeal to students and scholars of education policy as well as immigration and integration in both France and England.
