Описание: In this in-depth analysis, Peter Muir argues that Gordon Matta-Clark’s Conical Intersect (1975) is emblematic of Henri Lefebvre’s understanding of art’s function in relation to urban space. By engaging with Lefebvre’s theory in conjunction with the perspectives of other writers, such as Michel de Certeau, Jacques Derrida, and George Bataille, the book elicits a story that presents the artwork’s significance, origins and legacies. Conical Intersect is a multi-media artwork, which involves the intersections of architecture, sculpture, film, and photography, as well as being a three-dimensional model that reflects aspects of urban, art, and architectural theory, along with a number of cultural and historiographic discourses which are still present and active. This book navigates these many complex narratives by using the central ’hole’ of Conical Intersect as its focal point: this apparently vacuous circle around which the events, documents, and other historical or theoretical references surrounding Matta-Clark’s project, are perpetually in circulation. Thus, Conical Intersect is imagined as an insatiable absence around which discourses continually form, dissipate and resolve. Muir argues that Conical Intersect is much more than an ’artistic hole.’ Due to its location at Plateau Beaubourg in Paris, it is simultaneously an object of art and an instrument of social critique.

Описание:

Art Nouveau masters Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Henry van de Velde shared a commonality rare among the creative figures who played central roles in that turn-of-the-century design movement. Both began their careers with a lifetime of easel art-making as their goal, but ultimately redirected their energies to the primarily functional realms of architecture and the applied arts. This professional shift is especially noteworthy given the contrasts between the Scottish Mackintosh and the Belgian van de Velde, in personality, in cultural conditioning, and in the very nature of their Art Nouveau output.

One can point to other similarities between the two innovators. For one, while most at home with the painstaking precision of handcraftsmanship, both were, at the same time, drawn to the benefits of industrial manufacture, speed, high volume, and product uniformity, their shared attraction to industrial production nurtured by the respective environments in which they passed their young years. By the mid-19th Century, Mackintosh's native Glasgow had won global renown for its shipbuilding sector, enabled chiefly by technical advances made in the factories that ringed the city. Belgium, in turn, made its industrial mark on the European continent through the manufacture of high speed trains. Van de Velde, although raised in Antwerp, a mecca for handcrafted textiles, nonetheless capitalized on the advantages to his Brussels design firm offered by Belgium's industrial sophistication.

For another, both masters found greater appreciation for their groundbreaking efforts on foreign soil than in their home countries. Mackintosh, in concert with Margaret Macdonald, flourished in Vienna, where the couple's Scottish Rooms, featured in the Eighth Secession Exhibition (1902), generated excitement in public, as well as critical circles. Van de Velde's continental successes were more extensive. In 1896, his interiors played a significant part in Siegfried Bing's Maison Art Nouveau, while, in the first decade of the 20th Century, he was awarded multiple commercial commissions in Berlin. The respect generated by the impressive interiors he completed in that metropolis, resulted in the Directorship of the Weimar Kunstgewerbeschule and, in 1908, an invitation to join the Deutscher Werkbund.

There remains, however, one parting of the ways in the career trajectories of Mackintosh and van de Velde, a divergence linked to the emergence of women as creative forces in design. Here, the pooling of skills by Mackintosh and Macdonald in the completion of major commissions, added to the freedom given the couple by Catherine Cranston in the fitting out of her Glasgow tearooms, finds no parallel in van de Velde's professional path. The major impact of women's stylistic judgment on today's design cosmos is owed, in large part, to these Scotswomen.

Описание: At the centre of Decolonising Intercultural Education is a simple yet fundamental question: is it possible to learn from the Other? This book argues that many recent efforts to theorise interculturality restrict themselves to a variety of interpretations within a Western framework of knowledge, which does not necessarily account for the epistemological diversity of the world.

Описание: After studying architecture at Cornell University, Matta-Clark developed more interest in buildings about to be destroyed than in the ones about to be built, as most architects would. He first forced his way into abandoned apartment buildings in the Bronx, and using a chain saw, would act as an architecture pirate, cutting pieces of walls and floors, only to leave behind the remains of what once was architecture. From pieces of walls his work shifted in 1974 to the scale of a whole suburban house. "Splitting", probably his most popular work, was made by cutting a vertical line through the entire width of the house, and transforming the cut into a yawn, after lowering the foundations on both sides of the house. Erasing the boundaries between architecture, sculpture, and even drawing (his cuts have often been referred to as drawings in space), his building-cuts can also be understood as a social critique of the standardized suburban architecture that flourished during the postwar decades. This monograph opens with Thomas Crow's survey text on the artist. Divided into four chapters plus an epilogue, this illustrated essay provides insight into the career of the artist, from his childhood spent between New York and Paris, to his premature death in 1978 at the age of 35. This essays spans the multi-faceted practice of Gordon Matta-Clark, with a particular emphasis on his building-cuts, the group of works he is most renowned for and that compose the most important part of his career. Christian Kravagna's essay analyses the different roles played by photography and films in Matta-Clark's work. Since his building-cuts were all ephemeral works done on buildings shortly before their destruction, Matta-Clark started to use photography and film as a way to document his actions. But soon photography and film played a much more complex role, and became works of art in their own right. Judith Russi Kirshner's essay analyzes Matta-Clark's notion of community, ranging from the restaurant "Food" that he opened in 1971 in Soho, to the workshop/artists spaces at 98 and 112 Greene Street where he played a key role in their development, to the creation of the Anarchitecture group - a group of artists and architects that proposed alternative and often political and utopian architecture and environment projects - to his "Fresh Air" piece - a cart with oxygen masks he displayed in Wall Street, free for the passers-by to use. Matta-Clark's work goes much beyond the building-cuts he is most famous for, and is strongly rooted in a notion of social community. This book also includes a "Documents" section, composed of original interviews, articles, and documents compiled by editor Corinne Diserens. Several interviews, some of them never published before, allow the reader to understand more fully, and through Matta-Clark's own voice, the more pragmatic, technical and physical dimensions related to the creation of his building-cuts. Some articles and essays of reference, most of them published in the 1970s and today out of print, are also republished and offer a unique critical background and context to his work.
