Over the past two decades, Zapatista indigenous community members have asserted their autonomy and self-determination by using everyday practices as part of their struggle for lekil kuxlejal, a dignified collective life connected to a specific territory. This in-depth ethnography summarizes Mariana Mora’s more than ten years of extended research and solidarity work in Chiapas, with Tseltal and Tojolabal community members helping to design and evaluate her fieldwork. The result of that collaboration—a work of activist anthropology—reveals how Zapatista kuxlejal (or life) politics unsettle key racialized effects of the Mexican neoliberal state.
Through detailed narratives, thick descriptions, and testimonies, Kuxlejal Politics focuses on central spheres of Zapatista indigenous autonomy, particularly governing practices, agrarian reform, women’s collective work, and the implementation of justice, as well as health and education projects. Mora situates the proposals, possibilities, and challenges associated with these decolonializing cultural politics in relation to the racialized restructuring that has characterized the Mexican state over the past twenty years. She demonstrates how, despite official multicultural policies designed to offset the historical exclusion of indigenous people, the Mexican state actually refueled racialized subordination through ostensibly color-blind policies, including neoliberal land reform and poverty alleviation programs. Mora’s findings allow her to critically analyze the deeply complex and often contradictory ways in which the Zapatistas have reconceptualized the political and contested the ordering of Mexican society along lines of gender, race, ethnicity, and class.

Описание: Occupy Wall Street did not come from nowhere. It was part of a long history of riot, revolt, uprising, and sometimes even revolution that has shaped New York City. From the earliest European colonization to the present, New Yorkers have been revolting. Hard hitting, revealing, and insightful, Revolting New York tells the story of New York’s evolution through revolution, a story of near-continuous popular (and sometimes not-so-popular) uprising.Richly illustrated with more than ninety historical and contemporary images, historical maps, and maps drawn especially for the book, Revolting New York provides the first comprehensive account of the historical geography of revolt in New York, from the earliest uprisings of the Munsee against the Dutch occupation of Manhattan in the seventeenth century to the Black Lives Matter movement and the unrest of the Trump era. Through this rich narrative, editors Neil Smith and Don Mitchell reveal a continuous, if varied and punctuated, history of rebellion in New York that is as vital as the more standard histories of formal politics, planning, economic growth, and restructuring that largely define our consciousness of New York’s story.
Until exceeded by the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a little-known occurrence on the northern frontier would represent the highest number of civilians - perhaps as many as 800 - ever killed by hostile action on American soil.
This is the story of a major Indian war that exploded suddenly in the relatively settled region of southern Minnesota in 1862 - a conflict that has come to be known as the Minnesota Uprising - and over the months that followed extended far west into the vast reaches of the Great Plains.
Interspersed in that broader tale is the true-life story of members of three families brought together in the chaos of war by remarkable circumstances. Compiled from detailed family records, photographs, and correspondence, Fire in the North chronicles their triumphs and travails during this exceptional period in American history.
Though often lost in the shadow cast by the cataclysmic events of the Civil War raging at the same time, the conflict along America's frontier is an important episode in our history and deserves the detailed recounting that Fire in the North so aptly provides.

In the indigenous Andean language of Aymara, pachakuti refers to the subversion and transformation of social relations. Between 2000 and 2005, Bolivia was radically transformed by a series of popular indigenous uprisings against the country's neoliberal and antidemocratic policies. In Rhythms of the Pachakuti, Raquel Gutiérrez Aguilar documents these mass collective actions, tracing the internal dynamics of such disruptions to consider how motivation and execution incite political change.
"In Rhythms of the Pachakuti we can sense the reverberations of an extraordinary historical process that took place in Bolivia at the start of the twenty-first century. The book is the product of Raquel Gutiérrez Aguilar's political engagement in that historical process. . . . Though of Mexican nationality, [she] was intimately involved in Bolivian politics for many years and acquired a quasi-legendary status there as an intense, brilliant activist and radical intellectual. . . . Описание: Two classic first hand accounts of 18th century American Colonial Warfare Britain's victory in the French and Indian War did not bring peace to the American wilderness. Formal treaties between European powers meant little to the native Indian allies of each side who perpetuated their opposition to their white and 'red' skinned enemies in hopes of a return to a former balance of power and influence. So it was that Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa's at the head of a confederation of Indian allies rose up in 1763 slaughtering the occupants of settlements and burning forts before he came before the substantial defences of Detroit. The principal account of this engagement told within this book comes from the pen of the secretary to the posts commanding officer. It is thorough in its detail and gripping as a story in almost cinematographic proportions. Those who have been fascinated by the accounts of beleaguered garrisons such as Rorke's Drift, Chitral and others with find much to engage them here. Readers who are fascinated by the French and Indian War will appreciate this book's second piece from the pen of that most famous of rangers-Major Robert Rogers-who provides his customary incisive view of the events of the war. Highly Recommended.
