Описание: The myth and the reality of Ethan Allen and the much-loved Green Mountain Boys of Vermont--a surprising and interesting new account...useful, informative reexamination of an often-misunderstood aspect of the American Revolution (Booklist). In the highly recommended (Library Journal) Those Turbulent Sons of Freedom, Wren overturns the myth of Ethan Allen as a legendary hero of the American Revolution and a patriotic son of Vermont and offers a different portrait of Allen and his Green Mountain Boys. They were ruffians who joined the rush for cheap land on the northern frontier of the colonies in the years before the American Revolution. Allen did not serve in the Continental Army but he raced Benedict Arnold for the famous seizure of Britains Fort Ticonderoga. Allen and Arnold loathed each other. General George Washington, leery of Allen, refused to give him troops. In a botched attempt to capture Montreal against specific orders of the commanding American general, Allen was captured in 1775 and shipped to England to be hanged. Freed in 1778, he spent the rest of his time negotiating with the British but failing to bring Vermont back under British rule. A worthy addition to the canon of works written about this fractious period in this countrys history (Addison County Independent), this is a groundbreaking account of an important and little-known front of the Revolutionary War, of George Washington (and his good sense), and of a major American myth. Those Turbulent Sons of Freedom is an engrossing (Publishers Weekly) and essential contribution to the history of the American Revolution.

Описание: Beau Geste is a 1924 adventure novel by P. C. Wren. It has been adapted for the screen several times. Michael "Beau" Geste is the protagonist. The main narrator (among others), by contrast, is his younger brother John. The three Geste brothers of Brandon Abbas are used as a metaphor for the British upper class values of a time gone by, and "the decent thing to do" is, in fact, the leitmotif of the novel. The Geste brothers are orphans and have been brought up by their aunt. The rest of Beau's band are mainly Isobel and Claudia (only daughter of Lady Patricia, and in a way, also reason enough for Michael to join the French Foreign Legion), and Lady Patricia's relative Augustus. When a precious jewel known as the "Blue Water" goes missing, suspicion falls on the young people, and Beau leaves Britain to join the Foreign Legion (la L gion trang re), followed by his brothers, Digby (his twin) and John. There, after some adventure and separation from Digby, the sadistic Sergeant Lejaune gets command of the little garrison at Fort Zinderneuf in French North Africa, and only an attack by Tuaregs prevents a mutiny and mass desertion (of course the Geste brothers and a few loyals are against the plot). Throughout the book and adventures, Beau's behaviour is true to France and the Legion, and he dies at his post. At Brandon Abbas, the last survivor of the three brothers, John, is welcomed by their aunt and his fianc e Isobel, and the reason for the jewel theft is revealed to have been a matter of honour, and to have been the only "decent thing" possible.

Описание: Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) was an English designer, mathematician and the Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University. It was not until 1663 that Wren tried his hand at architecture, and his first commission was the job of designing Pembroke College Chapel at Cambridge University. Next was the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, based on the classical design of the Roman Theatre of Marcellus. This was the work that made Wren's reputation as an architect. From these beginnings Wren became the greatest architect of his time and is best known for his work in London after the Great Fire of 1666, in particular his iconic work on the restoration of St Paul's Cathedral. This catalogue is a comprehensive survey of the collection of Wren workshop drawings held by All Souls College, Oxford. It comprises 453 illustrations by Wren himself and by Edward Woodroofe, Thomas Laine and most notably by Nicholas Hawksmoor. Several other lesser known members of Wren's atelier are also represented in the archive. From humble parish church to grand plans for palaces and cathedrals, these drawings attest to the scope of Wren's career. He worked on projects for the greatest patrons of the period, redesigning parts of Hampton Court, Whitehall and Windsor. For Oxford and Cambridge Universities he was commissioned to build colleges and additional buildings for those already established. Wren also prepared plans for new work at Westminster School, his alma mater. In addition to expanding our understanding of how Wren's buildings developed from his imagination to finished construction we are offered a unique insight into the way in which the architect ran his studio. Surprisingly many of the drawings were delegated to trusted draughtsmen such as Hawksmoor and Laine. We see the emergence and development of their own talent alongside that of Wren. This is an indispensable resource for students of the career of Sir Christopher Wren, the work of his assistants, and the history of the English Baroque in architecture.
