Описание: "Kirbys contributions to the concept of "The Poet", was more than just the publications of some 300 separate poems, with reprints in magazines and anthologies making a total of over 780 poems published to date. Indeed, his life and his contributions, in both poetry and prose, have become a living symbol of a chosen vocation, that of the vision of the Poet as a philosopher of the human condition. True, his poems remain his first concern, but the reader of this bibliography will find that Kirby Congdon was not just a writer of poetry, he was also a student and a judge of poetry and its place in todays world"

Principles of Gravitational Lensing: Light Deflection as a Probe of Astrophysics and Cosmology

Описание: This textbook provides an introduction to gravitational lensing, which has become an invaluable tool in modern astrophysics, with applications that range from finding planets orbiting distant stars to understanding how dark matter and dark energy conspired to form the cosmic structures we see today. Principles of Gravitational Lensing begins with Einstein’s prediction that gravity bends light, and shows how that fundamental idea has spawned a rich field of study over the past century. The gravitational deflection of light was first detected by Eddington during a solar eclipse in May 1919, launching Einstein and his theory of relativity into public view. Yet the possibility of using the phenomenon to unlock mysteries of the Universe seemed remote, given the technology of the day. Theoretical work was carried out sporadically over the next six decades, but only with the discovery of the system Q0957+561 in 1979 was gravitational lensing transformed from a curiosity of general relativity into a practical observational tool. This book describes how the three subfields known as strong lensing, weak lensing, and microlensing have grown independently but become increasingly intertwined. Drawing on their research experience, Congdon and Keeton begin with the basic physics of light bending, then present the mathematical foundations of gravitational lensing, building up to current research topics in a clear and systematic way. Relevant background material from physics and mathematics is included, making the book self-contained.The derivations and explanations are supplemented by exercises designed to help students master the theoretical concepts as well as the methods that drive current research. An extensive bibliography guides those wishing to delve more deeply into particular areas of interest. Principles of Gravitational Lensing is ideal for advanced students and seasoned researchers looking to penetrate this thriving subject and even contribute research of their own.

Описание:

In this examination of Solzhenitsyn and his work, Lee Congdon explores the consequences of the atheistic socialism that drove the Russian revolutionary movement. Beginning with a description of the post-revolutionary Russia into which Solzhenitsyn was born, Congdon addresses the Bolshevik victory in the civil war, the origins of the concentration camp system, the Bolsheviks' war on Christianity and the Russian Orthodox Church, Solzhenitsyn's arrest near the war's end, his time in the labor camps, his struggle with cancer, his exile and increasing alienation from the Western way of life, and his return home. He concludes with a reminder of Solzhenitsyn's warning to the West—that it was on a path parallel to that which Russia had followed into the abyss.

Описание:

Embroiled in the political events surrounding World War I and the failed Hungarian revolutions of 1918-19, a number of intellectuals fled Hungary for Germany and Austria, where they essentially created Weimar culture. Among them were Georg Luk cs, whose History and Class Consciousness recast Marxism and challenged even those who repudiated its politics; Bela Bal zs, who pioneered film theory and collaborated with film-makers G. W. Pabst, Leni Riefenstahl, and Alexander Korda; L szl Moholy-Nagy, who codirected the Bauhaus during its heyday in the mid-1920s; and Karl Mannheim, whose Ideology and Utopia was the most widely discussed work of noncommunist social theory during the Weimar years. In this collective portrait combining intellectual history with biographical detail, Lee Congdon describes how Hungarian thinkers, each in a different way, passionately advocated the need for community in a Europe torn by war and revolution. Whether communist, avant-gardist, or Catholic convert, each thinker is examined within the vast tapestry of his works, his cultural and intellectual milieu, and his experience as an exile. Despite the ideological differences of these men, Congdon reveals how their personal destinies and social goals often merged. Since many were assimilated Jews, he argues that their thinking on society was inextricably intertwined with their youthful sensitivity to anti-Semitism in Hungary and with the isolating limitations of their lives in Germany and Austria.

Описание: This selection of short plays is a companion to Kirby Congdons one-act collection of plays, "God is Dead (Again)". At age eighty-seven, Congdon continues in his persistent quest for human understanding. He explores the meaning of life through a variety of existential questions and scenarios played out within the fourteen plays that comprise this collection. Kirby Congdon is one of those rare talents who is able to use a variety of mediums to express his artistic vision. This book represents the dramatic level in his search for enlightenment. Indeed, he blurs the lines between drama and poetry -- lines that have never been that clear anyway -- by using dialogue in his poems and lyrical values in his plays. The reader is taken on a thoughtful and entertaining trip from the personal world of self exploration to more universal commonalities of mans existence. "Here We Are" sparkles with Parkersonian wit.
