Описание: Often overlooked by modern critics, The Reverberator was a departure from Henry James immediately preceding novels, The Bostonians and The Princess Casamassima, returning to the popular international theme of his earlier fiction. Its comedy of manners explores the conflicting values of American and Europeanized characters in the context of topical cultural concerns. Most notably, in its satire on popular journalism and an emerging mass-media through the scandal sheet The Reverberator, the novel dramatizes what James presciently saw as the devouring publicity of modern life. This edition, based on the most reliable of the works first book appearances (Macmillan, 1888), provides a thorough account of the novels sources and composition, literary and historical contexts, and extensive revision for the New York Edition (1908), as well as extensive annotation. It will be of interest to James scholars, students of nineteenth-century Anglo-American literature and culture, and historians of journalism and new media.

Описание: From reviews of the first edition: "Here's a gem of a book...all peppered with delightful notes from science fiction films, novels, and comics. I can't turn a page without finding a jewel." Clifford Stoll, University of California, Berkeley (author of "The Cuckoo's Egg")From the Foreword by Kip Thorne (author of "Black Holes and Time Warps"):"In browsing this revised edition, I have been struck by the richness and complexity of the tapestry of ideas that Nahin presents. His interweaving of physics and fiction is done adeptly and keeps the book flowing.... Like a good journalist, Nahin simply reports what he sees in the physics and science fiction literature, commenting lucidly and often pointedly on the interconnections, contradictions, and controversies, but leaving it to his readers to form their own final judgments.... Nahin's book, with its complex tapestry of ideas and possibilities, may well remain the most readable and complete treatise on time travel in science and science fiction." Time Machines explores the idea of time travel from the first account in English literature to the latest theories of physicists such as Kip Thorne and Igor Novikov. This fascinating and very accessible book covers a variety of topics including the history of time travel in fiction; the fundamental scientific concepts of time, space-time, and the fourth dimension; the speculations of Einstein, Richard Feynman, Kurt Goedel, and others; time travel paradoxes, and much more. The new edition is substantially enlarged and updated throughout.

Описание: This is an essential book for the student and general reader of Faulkner who may need guidance in identifying and interrelating the more than 1,2000 characters in Faulkner's novels, short stories and sketches. Even the experienced reader will find this work a valuable aid in making his way through the labyrinth of Faulkner's style and plots. He will benefit especially from seeing, almost at a glance, the interconnections between all of Faulkner's writings. The Guide is constructed as follows: The novels from Soldiers' Pay (1926) to The Reivers (1962) are listed by title in the order of their publication. Under each title all of the named characters who appear or are mentioned in that work are listed alphabetically, together with the number of every page on which the character's name occurs. A concise account of the actions of each character is given, together with a description of that character's salient personality features. The name under which a character is listed in the Guide is often supplied in brackets when a nickname, maiden name, or other variant is used in the sketches. Major characters in each novel are indicated by boldface type. Immediately following the section devoted to the novels appear the named characters in all of Faulkner's short stories and sketches, which are also treated in the order of their publication. Carryover characters who are handled inconsistently by Faulkner are marked with an asterisk and treated further by the authors in the Appendix. In addition, the authors have included genealogical charts of the Sartoris, Burden, and McCaslin-Beauchamp-Edmonds families, as well as a map of Yoknapatawpha County. Finally, an alphabetically arranged Master Index of characters lists every work in which their names occur. Specific bibliographical information concerning editions is given, together with other editions, American and British, with the same pagination. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1963.

Описание:

The Complete Letters of Henry James fills a crucial gap in modern literary studies by presenting in a scholarly edition the complete letters of one of the great novelists and letter writers of the English language. Comprising more than ten thousand letters reflecting on a remarkably wide range of topics—from James’s own life and literary projects to broader questions on art, literature, and criticism—this edition will be an indispensable resource for students of James and of American and English literature, culture, and criticism. It will also be essential for research libraries throughout North America and Europe and for scholars who specialize in James, the European novel, and modern literature.

Pierre A. Walker and Greg W. Zacharias have conceived this edition according to the exacting standards of the Modern Language Association’s committee on scholarly editions. The first in the series, this two-volume work includes the letters from James's first extant one to those from 1869 in volume one and the letters from 1869 to 1872 in volume two.

Telling in Henry James: The Web of Experience and the Forms of Reality

Описание: Telling in Henry James argues that James's contribution to narrative and narrative theories is a lifelong exploration of how to "tell," but not, as Douglas has it in "The Turn of the Screw" in any "literal, vulgar way." James's fiction offers multiple, and often contradictory, reading (in)directions. Zwinger’s overarching contention is that the telling detail is that which cannot be accounted for with any single critical or theoretical lens—that reading James is in some real sense a reading of the disquietingly inassimilable "fictional machinery." The analyses offered by each of the six chapters are grounded in close reading and focused on oddments—textual equivalents to the “particles” James describes as caught in a silken spider web, in a famous analogy used in “The Art of Fiction” to describe the kind of “consciousness” James wants his fiction to present to the reader. Telling in Henry James attends to the sheer fun of James’s wit and verbal dexterity, to the cognitive tune-up offered by the complexities and nuances of his precise and rhythmic syntax, and to the complex and contradictory contrapuntal impact of the language on the page, tongue, and ear.
