Описание: In The Gingrich Senators, noted political scientist Sean Theriault documents how former House members, who learned politics at the knee of Newt Gingrich, have been behind the transformation of the U.S. Senate from the venerated chamber of the 1950s into the partisan battleground that is regularly the scorn of even the senators themselves.

Описание: Despite what we hear in the media, Americans have not become more polarized—they’re just better sorted into the political parties. Continuing the research reported in the widely-read Culture War?, Morris Fiorina shows in this new book that what has occurred in the United States is the sorting of partisan sub-groups within the larger electorate--especially among partisan office holders, party activists and campaign donors. Although party wars seem to prevail on every front every day, since political candidates are now more liberal (if Democratic) and more conservative (if Republican) than the country as a whole, perceptions can be deceiving. Voters confronted with more extreme candidates can only choose the least disagreeable. By no means has the political center vanished—it is simply homeless in today’s party system. The American public—even partisans--often shows more agreement on issues like gay marriage, abortion, and gun control than do the warring parties on the Hill or in the White House, suggesting that our country could make progress on the issues we face if only we could break the stranglehold two sorted parties hold on the political process.

Описание: This book examines the geography of partisan polarization, or the Reds and Blues, of the political landscape in the United States. It places the current schism between Democrats and Republicans within a historical context and presents a theoretical framework that offers unique insights into the American electorate. The authors focus on the demographic and political causes of polarization at the local level across space and time. This is accomplished with the aid of a comprehensive dataset that includes the presidential election results for every county in the continental United States, from the advent of Jacksonian democracy in 1828 to the 2016 election. In addition, coverage applies spatial diagnostics, spatial lag models and spatial error models to determine why contemporary and historical elections in the United States have exhibited their familiar, but heretofore unexplained, political geography. Both popular observers and scholars alike have expressed concern that citizens are becoming increasingly polarized and, as a consequence, that democratic governance is beginning to break down. This book argues that once current levels of polarization are placed within a historical context, the future does not look quite so bleak. Overall, readers will discover that partisan division is a dynamic process in large part due to the complex interplay between changing demographics and changing politics.
A comparative look at evangelical churches across the U.S.-Canada border that reveals deep political differences
It is now a common refrain among liberals that Christian Right pastors and television pundits have hijacked evangelical Christianity for partisan gain. The Politics of Evangelical Identity challenges this notion, arguing that the hijacking metaphor paints a fundamentally distorted picture of how evangelical churches have become politicized. The book reveals how the powerful coalition between evangelicals and the Republican Party is not merely a creation of political elites who have framed conservative issues in religious language, but is anchored in the lives of local congregations.
Drawing on her groundbreaking research at evangelical churches near the U.S. border with Canada--two in Buffalo, New York, and two in Hamilton, Ontario--Lydia Bean compares how American and Canadian evangelicals talk about politics in congregational settings. While Canadian evangelicals share the same theology and conservative moral attitudes as their American counterparts, their politics are quite different. On the U.S. side of the border, political conservatism is woven into the very fabric of everyday religious practice. Bean shows how subtle partisan cues emerge in small group interactions as members define how "we Christians" should relate to others in the broader civic arena, while liberals are cast in the role of adversaries. She explains how the most explicit partisan cues come not from clergy but rather from lay opinion leaders who help their less politically engaged peers to link evangelical identity to conservative politics.
The Politics of Evangelical Identity demonstrates how deep the ties remain between political conservatism and evangelical Christianity in America.
Radical redistricting plans, such as that pushed through by Texas governor Rick Perry in 2003, are frequently used for partisan purposes. Perry's plan sent twenty-one Republicans (and only eleven Democrats) to Congress in the 2004 elections. Such heavy-handed tactics strike many as contrary to basic democratic principles. In Drawing the Lines, Nicholas R. Seabrook uses a combination of political science methods and legal studies insights to investigate the effects of redistricting on U.S. House elections. He concludes that partisan gerrymandering poses far less of a threat to democratic accountability than conventional wisdom would suggest.Building on a large data set of the demographics of redrawn districts and subsequent congressional elections, Seabrook looks less at the who and how of gerrymandering and considers more closely the practical effects of partisan redistricting plans. He finds that the redrawing of districts often results in no detrimental effect for district-level competition. Short-term benefits in terms of capturing seats are sometimes achieved but long-term results are uncertain. By focusing on the end results rather than on the motivations of political actors, Seabrook seeks to recast the political debate about the importance of partisanship. He supports institutionalizing metrics for competitiveness that would prove more threatening to all incumbents no matter their party affiliation.

Описание: The US election of 1840 is the first presidential election of which it might be truly said, "It`s the Economy, Stupid." Tackling a contest best known for log cabins, cider barrels, and catchy songs, this volume reveals that the election of 1840 might be better understood as a case study of how profoundly the economy shapes the presidential vote.
