Описание: Post-genocide Narratives of Reconciliation in Rwanda develops a ‘narrative approach to reconciliation’, with Rwanda as case study. Many books on Rwanda have focused on a ‘high level analysis’ of the political context of the country, while many others have, in a less academic register, explored the stories of ordinary people. This book, with a particular focus on reconciliation, uniquely brings together the ‘official’ government narratives of reconciliation with the personal narratives of ordinary people. Drawing from fieldwork in Rwanda that has spanned almost ten years Post-genocide Narratives of Reconciliation in Rwanda explores the negative potential of narratives, through Rwanda’s pre-genocide, genocide and post-genocide periods, as well as the positive potential of narratives in Rwanda’s reconciliation process. Reconciliation has become an integral part of post conflict recovery processes which are largely facilitated by high level actors. For this reason, an approach that examines the intersection between personal and ‘official’ narratives seems pertinent in order to better understand reconciliation processes. The theoretical framework draws from both narrative and reconciliation theory, and a ‘narrative theory of reconciliation’ is thoroughly developed. This title will appeal to specialists interested in Africa, the Great Lakes region and more specifically, Rwanda, as well as those interested in reconciliation, transitional justice and post conflict recovery processes. Because the book explores the narratives of ordinary people, non-academics may also be interested.

Описание: Reconciliation is one of the most significant contemporary challenges in the world today. In this innovative new volume, educational academics and practitioners across a range of cultural and political contexts examine the links between reconciliation and critical pedagogy, putting forward the notion that reconciliation projects should be regarded as public pedagogical interventions, with much to offer to wider theories of learning. While ideas about reconciliation are proliferating, few scholarly accounts have focused on its pedagogies. This book seeks to develop a generative theory that properly maps reconciliation processes and works out the pedagogical dimensions of new modes of narrating and listening, and effecting social change. The contributors build conceptual bridges between the scholarship of reconciliation studies and existing education and pedagogical literature, bringing together the concepts of reconciliation and pedagogy into a dialogical encounter and evaluating how each might be of mutual benefit to the other, theoretically and practically. This study covers a broad range of territory including ethnographic accounts of reconciliation efforts, practical implications of reconciliation matters for curricula and pedagogy in schools and universities and theoretical and philosophical considerations of reconciliation/pedagogy. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of peace and reconciliation studies, educational studies and international relations.

From the intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict we learn of “thin” and “thick” recipes for solutions. In 1995, South Africa’s new government set up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a lynchpin of the country’s journey forward from apartheid. In contrast to the Nuremberg Trials and other retributive responses to atrocities, the TRC’s emphasis on reconciliation marked a restorative approach to addressing human rights violations and their legacies. The hearings, headed by Bishop Desmond Tutu, began in spring of 1996.
The commission was set up with three purposes: to investigate abuses, to assist victims with rehabilitation, and to consider perpetrators’ requests for amnesty. More than two decades after the first hearings, the TRC’s legacy remains mixed. Many families still do not know what became of their loved ones, and the commission came under legal challenges both from ex-president F. W. de Klerk and the African National Congress. Yet, the TRC fulfilled a vital role in the transition from apartheid to democracy, and has become a model for other countries.
This latest addition to the Ohio Short Histories of Africa series is a trenchant look at the TRC’s entire, stunningly ambitious project. And as a longtime activist for justice in South Africa and a former commissioner of the TRC, Mary Ingouville Burton is uniquely positioned to write this complex story.
