Grayscale coloring is a nice way to bring full scale images to life using your own choice of color. It is not line art like most coloring books but rather it includes all values from black to white and all the shades in between. Some find this type of coloring intimidating but I assure you, once you find the right medium to use, you will really enjoy it. The key to this type of coloring is to use transparent colors mostly - that way the shading comes through. My favorite medium for grayscale coloring is alcohol markers such as Copic markers and others. Artist Loft (Michael's brand) markers work wonderfully as well. Pastel chalks and colored pencils work well with this type of coloring too. I suggest using colored pencils for coloring over dark areas (transparent markers won't work to cover dark grey or black). I would recommend not using crayons or anything too opaque (except for using over dark areas) because it will cover the shading. If you use markers, please put a piece of heavy paper between the pages to prevent bleed through. Also, this coloring book is not suitable for any wet media such as watercolor or watered down paint of any kind. You are free to copy the pages (for personal use ONLY) and print out on watercolor paper or heavier paper if you like so you can try different mediums. ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S BOOK
This Skyhook Coloring Storybook is adapted from the children's picture book "The Baker's Dozen: A Saint Nicholas Tale," retold by Aaron Shepard and illustrated by Wendy Edelson. The book was published in 1995 by Atheneum, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, and was honored as an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists and a Trumpet Book Club Selection. It is still available today, now in a new edition from Skyhook Press with bonus cookie recipe and pattern.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Wendy Edelson has applied her award-winning skills to a wide range of illustration projects, including picture books, pet portraits, posters, and puzzles. Her clients have included Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo, the Seattle Aquarium, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the U.S. Postal Service, McGraw-Hill Education, and the American Library Association. More recent projects have included offering coloring pages on Etsy and illustrating "Quackling," another retelling of Aaron's. The grayscale pictures in this coloring book have been converted by Skyhook Press from Wendy's original watercolor illustrations.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Aaron Shepard is the award-winning author of many children's books from publishers large and small. Once a professional storyteller, Aaron specializes in lively retellings of folktales and other traditional literature, which have won him honors from the American Library Association, the New York Public Library, the Bank Street College of Education, the National Council for the Social Studies, and the American Folklore Society. Aaron first heard the legend of the baker's dozen from storyteller Sheila Dailey and later retold it with the help of texts dating back to 1896.
