Verse Drama in England, 1900-2015 provides a critical and historical exploration of a tradition of modern dramatic creativity that has received very little scholarly attention. Exploring the emergence of a distinctly modern verse drama at the turn of the century and its development into the twenty-first, it counters common assumptions that the form is a marginal, fundamentally outdated curiosity. Through an examination of the extensive and diverse engagement of literary and theatrical writers, directors and musicians, Irene Morra identifies in modern verse drama a consistent and often prominent attempt to expand upon, revitalize, and redefine the contemporary English stage.
Dramatists discussed include Stephen Phillips, Gordon Bottomley, John Masefield, James Elroy Flecker, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, Ronald Duncan, Christopher Fry, John Arden, Anne Ridler, Tony Harrison, Steven Berkoff, Caryl Churchill, and Mike Bartlett. The book explores the negotiation of these dramatists with the changing position of verse drama in relation to constructions of national and communal audience, aesthetic challenge, and dramatic heritage. Key to the study is the self-conscious positioning of many of these dramatists in relation to an assumed mainstream tradition - and the various critical responses that that positioning has provoked. The study advocates for a scholarly revaluation of what must be identified as an influential and overlooked tradition of aesthetic challenge and creativity.

Описание: The National Theatre's years at the Old Vic were the most Shakespearean period in its history, beginning in 1963 with Laurence Olivier's inaugural production of Hamlet, starring Peter O'Toole, and ending in 1975 with Peter Hall's production of the same play led by Albert Finney. Between them lay performances that included Olivier's then-legendary, now deeply controversial, Othello, a celebrated all-male As You Like It, the visit of the Berliner Ensemble with Brecht's version of Coriolanus, Franco Zeffirelli's festive Much Ado about Nothing, and Tom Stoppard's classic offshoot, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
Drawing upon a wealth of previously unseen material from the company archives, this book tells the inside story of the National's relationship with Shakespeare, within a landscape of institutional struggle, political upheaval and cultural transformation. Between them, the productions illuminate Olivier's legacy as an actor, his and Hall's achievements as directors, the role of the National in the Shakespearean careers of, amongst others, John Gielgud, Anthony Hopkins, Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith and Billie Whitelaw, its pioneering accommodation of European theatre practitioners, and its distinctive ways of engaging Shakespeare with the Britain of the 1960s and 1970s.
Featuring work by some of the most prolific playwrights of the 20th and 21st centuries, and together in one volume, the anthology offers young performers between the ages of 13 and 19 an engaging selection of plays to perform, read or study.
Each play has been specifically commissioned by the National Theatre's literary department over the years, with the young performer in mind. In 2016, these plays were then performed by approximately 500 schools and youth theatre companies across the UK and Ireland, in partnership with multiple professional partner regional theatres at which the works were showcased.
The anthology contains all 12 of the play scripts; notes from the writer and director of each play, addressing the themes and ideas behind the play; and production notes and exercises for the drama groups.
This year's anniversary anthology includes plays by Snoo Wilson, Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt; Simon Armitage; Jackie Kay; Patrick Marber; Mark Ravenhill; Bryony Lavery & Frantic Assembly; Davey Anderson; James Graham; Katori Hall; Carl Grose; Stacey Gregg; and Lucinda Coxon.
