Описание: The world at times feels like a Mad Mans dream in which we are all working hard to make our fears come true. The Mad Man creates vivid illusions to induce fear and madness into our minds for the purpose of gaining ultimate control over our lives. And somehow, we are easily lured into giving up our own intelligence, externalizing our power, and surrendering to new addictions that condition us to keep procrastinating in a world where we were meant to realize the power of our human existence in its most ideal and balanced form. As we increasingly disconnect from our true nature, valuing things that are irrelevant but that somehow still touch and appease our insecure souls, we lose ever more trust in ourselves and each other. It then becomes easy for the Mad Man to take full control of everything we have, including our healthy relationships, genuine joy, clean water, real food, and a secure environment. As a result, he can package and sell even our most fundamental rights back to us, rights generously given to us by Mother Earth in the first place, to steadily increase the level of his power and control. Madness Overrated explores the mad dynamics of the consumption-based, growth-driven world and its undeniably powerful role in affecting virtually every aspect of our lives and reshaping our existence as humans. The book presents deep-reaching observations on the human mind as it undergoes various changes while adapting to everything imposed onto it by society in the name of progress, productivity, and growth. The authors feelings and views are shared as a part of her own experiment called life. Her intent is to inspire the audience to ask themselves honest questions about the mad lives we live and thereby rediscover our natural curiosity to look inquisitively behind the facades of the many illusions we were made to believe. The questions she poses may seem simple, yet they are critical and powerful. Readers will be astonished to unearth thoughts that are eager to surface. Thoughts and questions that have been lingering in their minds are spoken aloud and challenged with further questioning. They see that they are not alone in the way they feel under the artificial pressures of our mad world, and they are not necessarily the ones to blame. The book encourages and leads readers to open their eyes and hearts and reassess the essence of what guides their lives. If they find this essence is in line with their own visions and values, Madness Overrated will show them how to transform the madness that the Mad Man has created within them and create their own unique, ideal path.

Описание: Diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1950s, German writer and artist Unica Zurn produced a wealth of remarkable textual and visual material within psychiatric institutions across Germany and France. While Zurn is often discussed in relation to her partner, the controversial artist Hans Bellmer, this innovative book moves beyond the familiar model of the overlooked 'significant other' and re-introduces her as a member of the French Surrealist group. This is the first monograph on the life and work of the Unica Zurn in English. Esra Plumer presents Zurn's life and work in light of the artist's individual experiences with WWII, Post-war Surrealism and mental illness, at the same time revealing wider aspects of her artistic practice in relation to her contemporaries. She also reveals how the techniques of anagrams and automatism (writing and drawing methods designed to unlock the subconscious mind) form the pillars of Zurn's artistic creative output, which carry her work into the wider theoretical circles of psychoanalytic theory and post-structuralist thought.
