On the Arab Revolts and the Iranian Revolution: Power and Resistance Today is the first comparative analysis of two central political events that have altered our world forever: the Arab uprisings which started in Tunisia, and the Iranian revolution in 1979. Adib-Moghaddam demonstrates how contemporary forms of protest are changing our understanding about the way power and resistance function. In a theoretical tour de force which is substantiated with a range of primary material, he argues that acts of protest in Tehran to Cairo can be entirely linked to the same act in New York, London, Madrid and Athens. Breaking through the east/west, north/south divide, Adib-Moghaddam shows how the Arab revolts promise to shift the discourse away from the idea that Arabs and Muslims are peculiar, that "Middle Eastern Studies" cannot be linked to political theory, that the dynamics of rebellion "there" are fundamentally different from the politics of revolt "here". Adib-Moghaddam argues that the dialectics of power and resistance are truly universal and that they are unfolding within a globalised political context that is increasingly interconnected. In order to illuminate this argument theoretically, the study is organised around conceptual terms that feed into forms of power and resistance, such as revolution, radicalism, dissent, knowledge, neighbour and reform. These terms and concepts are discussed and deconstructed via an empirical discussion of pivotal events beyond the non-western world, demonstrating that for a long time, and without realising it, we have been living in the end times of unitary categories such as "west" and "east."

Описание: This book seeks to dispel the myth that we have ever been embroiled in some "clash of civilisations." Adib-Moghaddam traverses various intellectual disciplines in order to find a pathway through the conceptual maze that has habituated us to think in "tribal" categories. Accompanying the reader on this journey from the wars between ancient Persia and Greece, the Crusades, Colonialism and the Enlightenment to the contemporary "wars on terror" are thinkers from "East" and "West": Adorno, Derrida, Farabi, Foucault, Hegel, Khayyam, Marcuse, Marx, Said, Ibn Sina, Weber. In asking where ideas such as the "clash of civilisations" come from, and by whom they are perpetuated, Adib-Moghaddam engages with both western and Islamic representations of the "other." He demonstrates a) the discontinuities between 'Islamism' and the canon of classical Islamic philosophy distinguishing between "Avicennian" and "Qutbian" discourses of Islam, and b) how the violence inscribed in the idea of the "West," especially during the period of the Enlightenment, continues to cast a shadow on world politics today. Expanding the geography of critical theory to include the canons of Islamic philosophy and poetry, A Metahistory of the Cash of Civilisations refuses to divorce Muslims from Europeans, Americans from Arabs, the Orient from the Occident. As such, it presents a frontal attack on our current cultural reality and Islamist-Western agitation against each other.

Описание: The purpose of this book is to provide both academic and industry perspectives on T-shaped talent as a framework to develop the next generation workforce. This book will include a number of chapters from the authors of this book (Y. Moghaddam, H. Demirkan and J. Spohrer), and edited chapters from a number of additional experts who have been working on next generation of workers. The ISSIP BEP T-Summit collection aims to offer insights and practical wisdom easily applicable to the workplace. The context in which service is designed, delivered and experienced has been changing fundamentally. With exponentially growing and evolving technology-enabled, service transformations and innovations (e.g. IBM, Rolls-Royce, Amazon, Google, Lego, Disney, Tesco, iTunes, Uber, Smart Phones, Etsy, AirBnB, eBay). With this project, we envision to capture the latest thinking, experiences and results, and to publish a collection of practical, focused, easily digestible short papers in the increasingly important area of T-shape talent development, which integrates a variety of disciplines – including areas in engineering, social sciences and management – to focus education, research and practice on an expanding innovation economy.

Описание: The last several years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of neurobiologists building or using computer-based models as a regular part of their efforts to understand how different neural systems function. As experimental data continue to amass, it is increasingly clear that detailed physiological and anatomical data alone are not enough to infer how neural circuits work. Experimentalists appear to be recognizing the need for the quantitative approach to explore the functional consequences of particular neuronal features that are provided by modeling. This combination of modeling and experimental work has led to the creation of the new discipline of computational neurosciences. More than the use of models per se, the authors believe that computational neuroscience is most distinguished from classical neurobiology due to an explicit focus on how the nervous system computes. Thus, instead of obtaining experimental information about the structure of the nervous system for its own sake, a computational approach involves collecting the information most relevant to the advancement of functional understanding. In our hands, models, especially those based on the detailed physiology and anatomy of the brain region in question, capture what is known about this region while also directing further experimental investigations. These same models can then provide an interpretation for the obtained data. Thus, the interaction between experiments and computer modeling is increasingly iterative and interdependent.
