Описание: Why is quantum field theory of condensed matter physics necessary? Condensed matter physics deals with a wide variety of topics, ranging from gas to liquids and solids, as well as plasma, where owing to the inter- play between the motions of a tremendous number of electrons and nuclei, rich varieties of physical phenomena occur. Quantum field theory is the most appropriate "language," to describe systems with such a large number of de- grees of freedom, and therefore its importance for condensed matter physics is obvious. Indeed, up to now, quantum field theory has been succesfully ap- plied to many different topics in condensed matter physics. Recently, quan- tum field theory has become more and more important in research on the electronic properties of condensed systems, which is the main topic of the present volume. Up to now, the motion of electrons in solids has been successfully de- scribed by focusing on one electron and replacing the Coulomb interaction of all the other electrons by a mean field potential. This method is called mean field theory, which made important contributions to the explanantion of the electronic structure in solids, and led to the classification of insulators, semiconductors and metals in terms of the band theory. It might be said that also the present achievements in the field of semiconductor technology rely on these foundations. In the mean field approximation, effects that arise due to the correlation of the motions of many particles, cannot be described.

Neutron scattering has become a key technique for investigating the properties of materials on an atomic scale. The uniqueness of this method is based on the fact that the wavelength and energy of thermal neutrons ideally match interatomic distances and excitation energies in condensed matter, and thus neutron scattering is able to directly examine the static and dynamic properties of the material. In addition, neutrons carry a magnetic moment, which makes them a unique probe for detecting magnetic phenomena.
In this important book, an introduction to the basic principles and instrumental aspects of neutron scattering is provided, and the most important phenomena and materials properties in condensed matter physics are described and exemplified by typical neutron scattering experiments, with emphasis on explaining how the relevant information can be extracted from the measurements.

Описание: The Third Binational USA-USSR Symposium titled "Laser Optics of Con- densed Matter" was held in Leningrad 1 June - 5 June 1987. This volume con- tains the full text of 64 papers presented at (or prepared for) the Symposium in both plenary and poster sessions. This Symposium reestablished the very productive series of "Light Scattering" Binational Symposia which were initi- ated in Moscow in 1975. Unfortunately there was an eight-year hiatus follow- ing the Second Symposium in New York (1979). This interval, caused by serious chilling of the climate of USA-USSR collaboration, deprived the active scien- tists on both sides of the opportunity to meet and interact in the active format of a conference. During this eight year interval there has been very rapid and intense development of scientific activity in the general area of laser optics phe- nomena. The development of ultrafast laser sources has permitted rapid advances in time resolved spectroscopy and ultrafast processes; the field of optical bistability and strong nonlinearity became a hot topic; and intense work is now underway to clarify ideas of photon localization. These new dev- elopments complement many advances in the study of low dimensional systems such as surfaces, new work on phase transitions, and novel studies of elemen- tary excitations such as polariton-excitons in localized environments such as quantum wells and heterojunctions.

Описание: This book is a course in modern quantum field theory as seen through the eyes of a theorist working in condensed matter physics. It contains a gentle introduction to the subject and therefore can be used even by graduate students. The introductory parts include a derivation of the path integral representation, Feynman diagrams and elements of the theory of metals including a discussion of Landau-Fermi liquid theory. In later chapters the discussion gradually turns to more advanced methods used in the theory of strongly correlated systems. The book contains a thorough exposition of such non-perturbative techniques as 1/N-expansion, bosonization (Abelian and non-Abelian), conformal field theory and theory of integrable systems. The book is intended for graduate students, postdoctoral associates and independent researchers working in condensed matter physics.
