Описание: The circle method has its genesis in a paper of Hardy and Ramanujan (see Hardy 1])in 1918concernedwiththepartitionfunction andtheproblemofrep- resenting numbers as sums ofsquares. Later, in a series of papers beginning in 1920entitled "some problems of'partitio numerorum''', Hardy and Littlewood (see Hardy 1]) created and developed systematically a new analytic method, the circle method in additive number theory. The most famous problems in ad- ditive number theory, namely Waring's problem and Goldbach's problem, are treated in their papers. The circle method is also called the Hardy-Littlewood method. Waring's problem may be described as follows: For every integer k 2 2, there is a number s= s( k) such that every positive integer N is representable as (1) where Xi arenon-negative integers. This assertion wasfirst proved by Hilbert 1] in 1909. Using their powerful circle method, Hardy and Littlewood obtained a deeper result on Waring's problem. They established an asymptotic formula for rs(N), the number of representations of N in the form (1), namely k 1 provided that 8 2 (k - 2)2 - +5. Here

Описание: Die erste internationale Tagung "Allgemeine Ungleichungen" fand vom 9. bis 15. Mai im Mathematischen Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach statt. Da Herr Bellman leider aus gesundheitlichen Gr nden nicht teilnehmen konnte, hat sich gl cklicherweise Herr Beckenbach (Los Angeles) bereiterkl rt, zusammen mit den Herren Aczel (Waterloo, Onterio) und Aumann (M nchen) die Tagung zu leiten. Als Tagungssekrat r wirkte Herr Ger (Ka.towice). Die ?: { Teilnehmer kamen aus Europa, Amerika und Australien. Erfreulicherweise hat sich eine grtl ere Zahl von Teilnehmern aus Polen eingefunden; leider konnten keine Wissenschaftler aus Jugoslawien, Rum nien, der TBchechoslawakai und Ungarn kommen. Die Tagtmg wurde von Herrn Aczel er ffnet und von Herrn Aumann geschlossen. Zu der durch den Titel gegebenen allgemeinen Thematik haben die Teil- nehmer in sehr verschiedene Weise beigetragen. Trotzdem bildeten sich einige Schwerpunkte heraus: Funktionalungleichungen, inbesondere iterativen s, konvexe und verallgemejnert konvexe Funktionen, Differentialungleichungen, Ungleichungen der Funktionentheorie, Funktionalanalysis und Geometrie. Ferner wurden Anwendungen von Ungleichungen auf Differentialgleichungen, Physik, Warscheinlichkeits-, Informations- und Wirtschaftstheorie gebracht. Die als besondere Tagungspunkte augesetzten "Bemerkungen und Probleme" haben sich als u erst fruchtbar erwiesen, ja sogar in einem Fall zur vollst ndigen L sung eines aufgeworfenen Problems gef hrt. Die Tagung hat nicht nur gezeigt, da das Netz von Ungleichungen, das die. gesamte Analysis durchzieht, verdient in eigenst ndiger Weise und im Sinne allgemeiner Methoden behandelt zu werden, sondern auch best tigt, wie viel schneller und wirksamer der Ideenaustausch ist, der durch die Vortr ge und durch den pers nlichen Kontakt der Wissenschaftler untereinander zustande kommt, als die unpers nliche, nur literarische Information.
