Описание:

The legacy of the undisputed master of Ukiyo-e, from his artistic evolutions to the influence on and of his followers

The undisputed master of ukiyo-e, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is celebrated not only for his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji but also for his great versatility expressed in his treatment of all types of subjects: from landscapes to nature, portraits of kabuki actors, beautiful women, warriors and even ghosts and spirits, semilegendary beings and animals. Hokusai is also associated with restless change: of residence, of name (more than 30!) and of style. He had dozens of followers, and each of them represents an aspect of the masters vast oeuvre. These include Shinsai, Hokkei and Gakutei, who in turn influenced the following generation of artists.

Through a selection of over 250 works from the Municipal Museum of Chiba and other Japanese collections, this publication offers a reading of Hokusai that also includes his legacy, accompanying and comparing his output with that of others who followed in his footsteps and gave life to new lines, forms and balances of color within the classic themes of ukiyo-e.

Описание:

Hokusai's paper lanterns, games and paper toys show him to be an ingenious master of materials

Katsushika Hokusai remains one of Japan's most popular and influential artists. This handy volume presents the wide range of Hokusai's artistic production in terms of one of his most remarkable characteristics: his intellectual ingenuity. It explores the question of how the self-styled Man Mad about Drawing approached his subjects--how he depicted human bodies in motion, combined figures and landscapes, represented three-dimensional objects on two-dimensional surfaces and when he used the techniques of illusionism or adjusted reality for greater visual or emotional effect. Including some 50 stunning and unusual paintings, prints and drawings from the peerless Hokusai collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this book is a treasure trove that introduces readers to a witty, wide-ranging and inimitably ingenious Hokusai.

Known by at least 30 other names during his lifetime, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was an ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. In 1800, he published his two classic collections of landscapes, Famous Sights of the Eastern Capital and Eight Views of Edo. His influence extended to his Western contemporaries in nineteenth-century Europe, including Degas, Gauguin, Klimt, Franz Marc, August Macke, Manet and van Gogh.

Описание: Through his elegant brush paintings and masterful woodblocks, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) became one of Japan's most internationally-renowned artists. A master of ukiyo-eart, he singlehandedly transformed the art form from a simple style focused on courtesans and famous actors into a grander style depicting the beauty of nature seen through landscapes and wildlife. His style of art and his subjects evolved as many times as he changed his name, but Hokusai's talent as an artist remained constant and his influential role in later art movements such as Art Nouveau and Impressionism remains eternal.

Описание:

Recognized as one of the most interesting and vibrant artists of the Edo period, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is a major exponent of ukiyo-e. His fame is tied to the series of polychrome xylographs that illustrate the 108 heroes from the novel Suikoden (Brigands), a late-18th-century bestseller in China and Japan that described a band of brigands who defend those oppressed by injustice and government corruption. The book conjures imagery of violent, powerful warriors with muscular tattooed bodies--imagery that today inspires manga, anime, tattoo artists and illustrators across the world. Kuniyoshi embraced the genre of warrior prints, but he was also interested in portraits of female beauties, kabuki actors, landscapes, children and ghosts, another greatly admired genre in Japan. Nonetheless, his name is above all associated with Arcimboldo-like composite figures, figures within figures and parodies of stories and battles. His images are fantastical, baroque, rich in color and detail, with imposing characters and dynamic actions. This book surveys the work of a versatile and intriguing figure whose impressive technique birthed a school that continued for generations.

Описание: Eccentric Planet portrays the relationship between the young Renaissance mathematician Rheticus, and Nicolas Copernicus, the reclusive and cautious astronomer. In 1542 Rheticus described himself as "a rather daring young man." Some might call him reckless. Arthur Koestler, in The Sleepwalkers, presents Rheticus as: "...one of the knights errant of the Renaissance whose enthusiasm fanned borrowed sparks into flame...an enfant terrible, an inspired fool, a condottiere of science, an adoring disciple and, fortunately, either homo- or bi-sexual after the fashion of the time. I say "fortunately" because the so afflicted have always proved to be the most devoted teachers and disciples, from Socrates to this day, and History owes them a debt." A 25-year-old professor at Wittenberg, Rheticus ventured in 1539 to the distant Baltic coast in search of the secretive Copernicus. Brilliant, exuberant, Lutheran and audacious, he presented multiple challenges to the elderly Catholic canon Copernicus. They argued and struggled, and--despite a final betrayal--brought forth a book that changed our understanding of the universe.
