During the last 150 years, many physicists and specialists in thermodynamics, statistical and quantum mechanics been engaged in the solution of the Gibbs paradox. Based on findings, the book formulates a different approach to this paradox and substantiates it on the basis of physical and statistical principles. The book clearly shows that entropy consists of two parts, static and dynamic. Up to now, entropy has been connected only with the process dynamics. However, the Gibbs paradox is caused by the change in the static component of entropy. Finally, the book includes examples of separation processes and how to optimize them in various fields, including biology, cosmology, crystallography and the social sciences.

Описание: The interest in control of particulate processes has been triggered by the need to achieve tight distributed control of size distributions that greatly influence particulate product properties and quality. Drawing from recent advances in dynamics of infinite-dimensional systems and nonlinear control theory, control of particulate processes using population balances has evolved into a very active research area within the field of process control. This book - the first of its kind - presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear, robust and constrained feedback controllers for broad classes of particulate process models and illustrates their applications to industrially-important crystallization, aerosol and thermal spray processes. The controllers use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output tracking, attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty and handling of actuator saturation.Beginning with an introduction to control of particulate processes, the book discusses nonlinear order reduction and nonlinear, robust and constrained control of particulate spatially-homogeneous processes, and nonlinear control of spatially-homogeneous particulate processes. The synthesis of the controllers is performed by using geometric and Lyapunov-based control techniques. The book includes comparisons of the methods followed for controller synthesis with other approaches and discussions of practical implementation issues that can help researchers and engineers understand the development and application of the methods in greater depth. The methods are applied to continuous and batch crystallization processes, a titania aerosol reactor and a thermal spray process to regulate product size distribution. The book consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the field of supercritical and subcritical fluid extraction (SSFE) and their importance to food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Chapter 2 describes the concepts and methodologies for modeling, simulation as well as optimization. It presents conservation laws related to SFE traditional first principle modeling and optimization techniques, statistical modeling as well as advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques like genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic and artificial neural network (ANN). The characteristics and physical properties of palm oil as the most referred solute in the book, and descriptions of some existing palm oil industrial processes are presented in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, the first principle methodology is applied for modeling of properties of palm oil components, mixtures and for the supercritical fluid extraction of palm oil components. Modeling applications involving advanced techniques such as AI, ANN and fuzzy logics and ANFIS are discussed in Chapter 5. Next, Chapter 6 describes experimental design concepts and procedures as well as statistical optimization techniques involving SSFE processes. Finally, optimisation of SSFE using first principle modeling and other advanced techniques are presented in Chapter 7.
