Описание:

Winner of the 2007 Marshall Shulman Prize

The 1956 Hungarian revolution, and its suppression by the U.S.S.R., was a key event in the cold war, demonstrating deep dissatisfaction with both the communist system and old-fashioned Soviet imperialism. But now, fifty years later, the simplicity of this David and Goliath story should be revisited, according to Charles Gatis new history of the revolt.

Denying neither Hungarian heroism nor Soviet brutality, Failed Illusions nevertheless modifies our picture of what happened. Imre Nagy, a reform communist who headed the revolutionary government and turned into a genuine patriot, could not rise to the occasion by steering a realistic course between his peoples demands and Soviet geopolitical and ideological interests. The United States was all talk, no action, while Radio Free Europe simultaneously backed the insurgents unrealizable demands and opposed Nagy. In the end, the Soviet Union followed its imperial impulse instead of seeking a political solution to the crisis in the spirit of de-Stalinization.

Failed Illusions is based on extensive archival research, including the CIAs operational files, and hundreds of interviews with participants in Budapest, Moscow, and Washington. Personal observations by the author, a young reporter in Budapest in 1956, bring the tragic story vividly to life.

Описание: The art of optical illusion has been an integral part of painting since antiquity when it was used as a yardstick by which to judge an artist's level of mastery. In the centuries that followed - and continuing through contemporary times - artists from van Eyck to Gerhard Richter have delighted in "tricking the eye." That practice has extended to outdoor spaces with the likes of Banksy and Cayetano Ferrer. This book presents a fascinating overview of the different methods of illusion practiced by artists over hundreds of years. Organized into five chapters - Optical Illusions, Distortions and Hidden Images, De-Figurations, Questioning Perception, and Overstepping Reality - it brings together artists from various time periods and disciplines. Dozens of illustrated examples offer intriguing comparisons of works by Magritte and Li Wei, Cindy Sherman and Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Michelangelo and Duane Hanson, and many more. Readers will come away with an understanding of how artists perceive our world and how their reflections and distortions are at once confusing and enlightening.

Описание: During the Golden Age of Magic--the 1880s to the 1940s--magicians and prestidigitators fought a veritable advertising war. In the United States, Canada, and Europe, city walls were plastered with posters offering tantalizing previews of magician's most spectacular tricks. Poster designers and printers were inspired by all variety of phantasmagoric imagery: devils and demons, skeletons and skulls, cards and rabbits, alluring assistants and symbols of exoticism. Here, 250 breathtaking posters, mostly dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, retrace the social history of this still-active phenomenon. These magnificent, large-format chromolithographs immortalize the magicians and the acts that marked the world of modern magic.

Seven authors recognized as experts in their respective fields introduce this fabulous array of color and imagery. Published to accompany an exhibition at the McCord Museum in Montreal, which was gifted in 2015 with one of the largest collections of magic posters and documents in the world, the Allan Slaight Collection, this book will delight graphic designers, illustrators, and magic enthusiasts alike.
