Описание: It has been twenty years since the Indian Parliament passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. Yet more children work as labourers in India than in any other country in the world. This Omnibus brings together three significant works on child labour focusing on the key factors which create an exploitative relationship between the economy and the children of the poor and the marginalized.

In an Introduction written especially for this Omnibus, Neera Burra points out that there are definitional issues around the very concept of child labour and suggests that insights from feminist economics can help illuminate them; only then can we form an accurate picture of the role of child labour in the economy. In addition, she examines the strategy of different groups who have successfully worked against child labour. She argues that child labour can only be reduced when civil society andthe state work together to get children out of work and into school.

In The Child and the State, Myron Weiner argues that it is not Indias poverty which prevents the introduction of universal primary education and the banning of child labour, rather it is lack of political will and the belief systems prevalent in Indian society. Born to Work is based on first-hand field investigations into the employment of child labour in five industries: brassware, gem polishing, lock-making, pottery, and glass manufacture. Neera Burra documents the hazards that these children face and argues that working from a young age leads to a shortened working life.

Thus, child labour is not only a consequence of poverty, but also a major cause of it. In Child Rights in India, Asha Bajpai provides a detailed overview of the rights of the child in domestic and international law, with a detailed analysis of case law. The chapter excerpted here is devoted to the Right Against Economic Exploitation and includes an examination of various government schemes and NGO interventions, as well as testimonies from children who work as domestic labourers.

Описание: In recent years, journalists and environmentalists have pointed urgently to the melting Arctic as a leading indicator of the growing effects of climate change. While climate change has unleashed profound transformations in the region, most commentators distort these changes by calling them unprecedented. In reality, the landscapes of the North American Arctic as well as relations among scientists, Inuit, and federal governments are products of the region s colonial past. And even as policy analysts, activists, and scholars alike clamor about the future of our world s northern rim, too few truly understand its history.
In" Unfreezing the Arctic," Andrew Stuhl brings a fresh perspective to this defining challenge of our time. With a compelling narrative voice, Stuhl weaves together a wealth of distinct episodes into a transnational history of the North American Arctic, proving that a richer understanding of its social and environmental transformation can only come from studying the region s past. Drawing on historical records and extensive ethnographic fieldwork, as well as time spent living in the Northwest Territories, he closely examines the long-running interplay of scientific exploration, colonial control, the testimony and experiences of Inuit residents, and multinational investments in natural resources. A rich and timely portrait, "Unfreezing the Arctic" offers a comprehensive look at scientific activity across the long twentieth century. It will be welcomed by anyone interested in political, economic, environmental, and social histories of transboundary regions the world over.

Описание: Unfree labor has not disappeared from advanced capitalist economies. In this sense the debates among and between Marxist and orthodox economic historians about the incompatibility of capitalism and unfree labor are moot: the International Labour Organisation has identified forced, coerced, and unfree labor as a contemporary issue of global concern. Previously hidden forms of unfree labor have emerged in parallel with several other well-documented trends affecting labor conditions, rights, and modes of regulation. These evolving types of unfree labor include the increasing normalization of contingent work (and, by extension, the undermining of the standard contract of employment), and an increase in labor intermediation. The normative, political, and numerical rise of temporary employment agencies in many countries in the last three decades is indicative of these trends. It is in the context of this rapidly changing landscape that this book consolidates and expands on research designed to understand new institutions for work in the global era. This edited collection provides a theoretical and empirical exploration of the links between unfree labor, intermediation, and modes of regulation, with particular focus on the evolving institutional forms and political-economic contexts that have been implicated in, and shaped by, the ascendency of temp agencies. What is distinctive about this collection is this bi-focal lens: it makes a substantial theoretical contribution by linking disparate literatures on, and debates about, the co-evolution of contingent work and unfree labor, new forms of labor intermediation, and different regulatory approaches; but it further lays the foundation for this theory in a series of empirically rich and geographically diverse case studies. This integrative approach is grounded in a cross-national comparative framework, using this approach as the basis for assessing how, and to what extent, temporary agency work can be considered unfree wage labor

Описание: Religious discrimination is the norm in many countries around the world, and the rate is rising. Nearly every country which discriminates does so unequally, singling out some religious minorities for more discrimination than others. Religious tradition does not explain this complex issue. For example, Muslim majority states include both the most discriminatory and tolerant states in the world, as is also the case with Christian majority states. Religious ideologies, nationalism, regime, culture, security issues, and political issues are also all part of the answer. In The Unfree Exercise of Religion Jonathan Fox examines how we understand concepts like religious discrimination and religious freedom, and why countries discriminate. He makes a study of religious discrimination against 597 religious minorities in 177 countries between 1990 and 2008. While 29 types of discrimination are discussed in this book, the most common include restrictions in places of worship, proselytizing, and religious education.
