Описание: The Portuguese authorities balanced missionary and political dynamics as they sought to strengthen their claims over African territories in an imperial and colonial world that was becoming increasingly internationalized. This book sets out to investigate how missionary authorities reacted to national challenges from the monarchical and republican regimes, and rising competition within the Catholic world, as well as the "Protestant threat", at the international level. To what degree were religious and missionary projects a political instrument? Was this situation similar in other colonial empires? The 1890 British Ultimatum was part of a process of conflicting religious competition in Africa (among Catholics, and between Catholics and Protestants) in parallel with inter-imperial disputes. The Portuguese authorities saw missionary presence as a potentially useful political weapon, but it cut two ways: in favour of or against its colonial rule. Foreigner missionaries in what was considered the Portuguese empire were viewed as "threats" since they could act as political bridgeheads for other imperial powers or could influence the native populations against Portuguese colonial presence. Anglo-Portuguese competition in Africa, the "native" uprisings against Portuguese rule, the attempts to negotiate a concordat with the Holy See, the Portuguese First Republic, and the aftermath of the First World War had powerful effects on the direction of Portuguese statehood, and were reflected in substantive internal debate and political disagreement. The overview of missionary experience in the Portuguese empire provided in this book is a major contribution to the international historiography of missions and empires.

What are the stakes of performance in a time of war? How is artistic expression prone to manipulation by the state and international humanitarian organizations? From the standpoint of empire, Laura Edmondson explores cultural production that responds to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the twenty-year civil war in northern Uganda, and regional conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She examines memorial ceremonies, plays, indigenous performance, NGO media campaigns, and contemporary dance to reveal how artists and cultural workers challenge state and humanitarian narratives in the shadow of empire and how empire, in turn, infiltrates creative capacities. Carefully contextualizing these narratives within the charged political terrain of the Great Lakes Region, Edmondson deepens our understanding of the role of creative expression and cultural agency in conflict and postconflict zones.

Описание: This richly documented account of the arrival of rubber traders, new Christian missionaries, and the Portuguese colonial state in the Kongo realm is told from the perspective of the kingdom’s inhabitants. Jelmer Vos shows that both Africans and Europeans were able to forward differing social, political, and economic agendas as Kongo’s sacred city of São Salvador became a vital site for the expansion of European imperialism in Central Africa. Kongo people, he argues, built on the kingdom’s long familiarity with Atlantic commerce and cultures to become avid intermediaries in a new system of colonial trade and mission schools.Vos underlines that Kongo’s incorporation in the European state system also had tragic consequences, including the undermining of local African structures of authority—on which the colonial system actually depended. Kongo in the Age of Empire carefully documents the involvement of Kongo’s royal court in the exercise of Portuguese rule in northern Angola and the ways that Kongo citizens experienced colonial rule as an increasingly illegitimate extension of royal power.

Описание: Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire in Kenya is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping `tribe` over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, `loyalty`, martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself.

Описание: Sir Kennedy Trevaskis was the last High Commissioner of South Arabia - a role he held from 1963-1965, which provided the pinnacle of his career and yet also his ultimate failure. Trevaskis's imperial credentials were impeccable. He was a District Officer in Northern Rhodesia, followed by service in the Rhodesian Regiment in World War II, District Commissioner in the British Administered Eritrea after Italy's defeat, and finally High Commissioner in South Arabia and Aden colony. But here the British ambition to set up the Federation of South Arabia with Aden was ultimately frustrated by the rise of Arab nationalism and the British Labour government's decision to withdraw `East of Suez'. The Deluge is the memoir of a glittering career ending in ultimate failure and ignominy, but full of incident, humour and irreverence. Published for the first time, and with an extensive introduction by Wm. Roger Louis, this unique account sheds significant light on British foreign and imperial policy in the post-war era and particularly the end of empire in the Middle East.

In the late nineteenth century, an active slave trade sustained social and economic networks across the Ottoman Empire and throughout Egypt, Sudan, the Caucasus, and Western Europe. Unlike the Atlantic trade, slavery in this region crossed and mixed racial and ethnic lines. Fair-skinned Circassian men and women were as vulnerable to enslavement in the Nile Valley as were teenagers from Sudan or Ethiopia.
Tell This in My Memory opens up a new window in the study of slavery in the modern Middle East, taking up personal narratives of slaves and slave owners to shed light on the anxieties and intimacies of personal experience. The framework of racial identity constructed through these stories proves instrumental in explaining how countries later confronted—or not—the legacy of the slave trade. Today, these vocabularies of slavery live on for contemporary refugees whose forced migrations often replicate the journeys and stigmas faced by slaves in the nineteenth century.

Описание: This book offers newly transcribed data and fills a lacuna in the scholarship of early Sierra Leone. It presents a narrative of children as they experienced a set of circumstances which were unique to Abolitionist historiography, and demonstrates how each element of that situation arose.
The Ottoman Scramble for Africa is the first book to tell the story of the Ottoman Empire's expansionist efforts during the age of high imperialism. Following key representatives of the sultan on their travels across Europe, Africa, and Arabia at the close of the nineteenth century, it takes the reader from Istanbul to Berlin, from Benghazi to Lake Chad Basin to the Hijaz, and then back to Istanbul. It turns the spotlight on the Ottoman Empire's expansionist strategies in Africa and its increasingly vulnerable African and Arabian frontiers.
Drawing on previously untapped Ottoman archival evidence, Mostafa Minawi examines how the Ottoman participation in the Conference of Berlin and involvement in an aggressive competition for colonial possessions in Africa were part of a self-reimagining of this once powerful global empire. In so doing, Minawi redefines the parameters of agency in late-nineteenth-century colonialism to include the Ottoman Empire and turns the typical framework of a European colonizer and a non-European colonized on its head. Most importantly, Minawi offers a radical revision of nineteenth-century Middle East history by providing a counternarrative to the "Sick Man of Europe" trope, challenging the idea that the Ottomans were passive observers of the great European powers' negotiations over solutions to the so-called Eastern Question.

Описание: From the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, British Southern Africa saw hosts of Europeans arriving in the region to transform their lives and participate in colonial life in different ways. Their narratives have largely gone unexplored and unremembered until the present. Set against the more glamorous history of colonialism and the "civilizing" mission, this focused history seeks to recover some of these forgotten narratives, and to tell the stories of the people and groups who, as colonial immigrants in Southern Africa, accrued immense social and cultural wealth. Ruramisai Charumbira chronicles the life of Alfred Beit, a German who would make millions in South African mining and go on to shape African infrastructure. She then turns to examine the Catholic missionaries who influenced native colonial policy. Finally, she demonstrates how 'birthright colonials' -- the Scots, Irish, Welsh, and English -- constructed and negotiated ethnic and national identities that were cast into sharp relief in the colonies. These narratives combine to complicate our current picture of colonialism and its legacy, and this book will encourage readers to think in more nuanced ways about the differentiated and unequal societies that predominate in today's world.
