Описание:

Current research demonstrates that bullying affects all children in schools, not simply the several students who may be most visibly involved in an individual incident. In order to prevent escalation or to stop the action, something different must happen. The victim or bully must change, but this may not be easy. Importantly the classmates or the adults who witness the interaction have the power to change the interaction as well.
Bullying and Teasing: Social Power in Childrens Groups frames bullying and teasing as part of the critical foundations of elementary and middle school planning that will allow children to experience the sense of personal safety needed to learn and grow.

Bullying and Teasing is designed for school psychologists and other school mental health workers, including school counselors, social workers and school nurses, who want to address the ways bullying and teasing impact both individual students and the school as a whole. The book will also be of interest to school administrators, health coordinators, special educators and school board members.

Описание: This insightful volume integrates criminological theories, prevention science, and empirical findings to create an up-to-date survey of crime prevention research and strategies. Its interdisciplinary perspective expands on our knowledge of risk factors to isolate the malleable mechanisms that produce criminal outcomes, and can therefore be targeted for intervention. In addition, the text identifies developmental, lifespan, and social areas for effective intervention. Reviews of family-, community-, and criminal justice-based crime prevention approaches not only detail a wide gamut of successful techniques, but also provide evidence for why they succeed. And as an extra research dimension, the book’s chapters on methodological issues and challenges uncover rich possibilities for the next generation of crime prevention studies. Included in the coverage: Integrating criminology and prevention researchSocial disorganization theory: its history and relevance to crime preventionResearch designs in crime and violence preventionMacro- and micro-approaches to crime prevention and intervention programsImplications of life course: approaches for prevention sciencePromising avenues for prevention, including confronting sexual victimization on college campuses Spotlighting current progress and continuing evolution of the field, Preventing Crime and Violence will enhance the work of researchers, practitioners, academicians, and policymakers in public health, prevention science, criminology, and criminal justice, as well as students interested in criminology and criminal justice.

Homophobic Bullying: Research and Theoretical Perspectives

Описание: Homophobic Bullying: Research and Theoretical Perspectives provides a review of key studies that have shaped the way we view homophobia in educational contexts. Using theories and ideas drawn from psychology, sociology, anthropology, and ethology, this book aims to conceptualize homophobic
bullying as a construct of dominant institutions and groups that reinforce beliefs about the abnormality of homosexuality. Rivers demonstrates how bullying is a complex social process in which perpetrators are supported by active confederates, passive bystanders, and indifferent onlookers. Rivers
also discusses new forms of bullying, such as cyberbullying, and explores the theoretical and social-psychological implications of bullying using new technologies. He discusses the challenges faced by teachers in eroding negative, implicit attitudes in the face of socially acceptable, explicit
expressions of these attitudes.
Included here are primary data drawn from various studies that Rivers has conducted over the past two decades, along with discussions of key studies conducted by other researchers in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Scandinavia. Rivers explores the psycho-social correlates and potential long-term
effects of bullying and homophobia, using various clinical studies as a guide to understanding the potential harm that results from school-based aggression. An important feature of this book is the integration of primary quantitative and qualitative data, case studies from parents, suggested lesson
plans, and reports of recent legal action that highlight the dangers for students and teachers of not combating this particular form of school violence. Finally, the book looks to the future and the changing face of schools, the gradual erosion of homophobia as an accepted 'norm' within society, and
the institutions that train future generations. Ultimately, this book reflects the research journey of its author and the development of a substantive world-wide body of evidence charting the challenges faced by those who are or are simply labeled lesbian, gay, or bisexual.

Описание: Mapping and Monitoring Bullying and Violence is a guidebook for district and school education leaders and professionals to reduce incidents of violence and bullying and enhance students' well-being. Written in a step-by-step format, the text is designed to assist in collecting and making
better use of data on non-academic issues in schools, such as reports of victimization, weapon and drug possession, theft of personal property, suicide ideation, and other areas. The authors advocate an ongoing monitoring approach that involves collecting information from multiple audiences about
what is taking place in and around schools. One part of this process is mapping, which gives school leaders, students, and staff members a visual record of areas of the campus considered safe, alongside those that students view to be places where they might encounter bullying, harm, or trouble.
Other common parts of such systems are surveys among students, educators, and parents. The authors include practical examples of how to design such a system, gather current information, analyze and display the data, share it with different audiences, and use it to find solutions. Ultimately, this
timely guidebook is a must-have for social workers, psychologists, counselors, nurses, and others working to improve safety in schools.

Описание:

This brief presents a new approach to the study of bullying and prejudice in school settings, analyzing the particularities of these two forms of violence and relating them to the hierarchies that distinguish students based on academic performance and popularity. Analyzing data gathered by surveys carried out between 2010 and 2014 with 274 students from public schools of S o Paulo, Brazil, the authors show that, despite bullying and prejudice are related, they have specific characteristics that need to be acknowledged in order to help educators develop more efficient initiatives to prevent them.

Building upon the Critical Theory of Society - especially Adorno's studies of authoritarian personality and school hierarchies - the authors develop a theoretical framework that helps researchers and educators to identify the particularities of bullying and prejudice and develop specific strategies to deal with them. In addition, the empirical and theoretical elements presented in the book show how these forms of violence are related to the two hierarchies that exist side by side in schools - the official hierarchy that distinguishes good and bad students based on their academic performance and the unofficial hierarchy characterized by the distinction between those who excel in dating, fighting, in team sports and those who do not excel in any of these activities.

This innovative volume:

- Argues that bullying and prejudice are different forms of school violence that demand different theoretical and practical approaches

- Examines data gathered by surveys carried out with 274 students of public schools in S o Paulo, Brazil, between 2010 and 2014

- Relates bullying and prejudice to the hierarchies that distinguish students based both on their academic performance and popularity

- Analyzes the impact of factors such as autonomy from the school authority and the ideology of authoritarianism on bullying and prejudice

- Presents strategies to fight bullying and prejudice in schools

Bullying, Prejudice and School Performance: A New Approach is a useful and innovative tool for psychologists, educators, sociologists, school teachers and researchers in the fields of child and school psychology, educational psychology, sociology of education and related disciplines.

Описание: This book focuses on well-being at school in association with positive peer relationships and bullying. Taking an integrative and community-based approach, the book outlines the significance of student-school relationships for well-being and emphasizes the importance of school and classroom climate for promoting well-being. Embedded in research and theory, the book reflects the belief that all of our dealings with children and young people in whatever role, whether as parent or teacher or in some other capacity, are bounded by theory, either implicit or explicit. The book highlights the role of partnerships and linkages in addressing school-based well-being and anti-bullying programs. It pays special attention to the barriers and facilitators that schools must address in engaging with external agencies to deliver strong evidence-based initiatives. The international concern with school bullying is given particular consideration in relation to its impact on the well-being of all involved. A feature of the text is the focus given to the implementation of programs into the busy and complex world of schools and classrooms recognizing that the effectiveness and impact of any school-based program is strongly related to the quality of its implementation. The text reflects a commitment of the authors to a broad-based systemic view of development, taking into account family, school, community and culture as influential factors. The text incorporates a number of pedagogical features e.g. classroom based activities and discussion starters, reflections on points raised in the text, and case studies. This book is of special interest to teachers, school counselors, educational psychologists and mental health professionals working in school settings.
