Offers an entirely new understanding of the photographer's extraordinary career and its overlapping contexts of journalism and art
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) is one of the most influential and beloved figures in the history of photography. His inventive work of the early 1930s helped define the creative potential of modern photography. Following World War II, he helped found the Magnum photo agency, which enabled photojournalists to reach a broad audience through magazines such as Life while retaining control over their work. Cartier-Bresson would go on to produce major bodies of photographic reportage, capturing such events as China during the revolution, the Soviet Union after Stalin's death, the United States in the postwar boom and Europe as its older cultures confronted modern realities. Published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this is the first major publication to make full use of the extensive holdings of the Fondation Cartier-Bresson--including thousands of prints and a vast resource of documents relating to the photographer's life and work. The heart of the book surveys Cartier-Bresson's career through 300 photographs divided into 12 chapters. While many of his most famous pictures are included, a great number of images will be unfamiliar even to specialists. A wide-ranging essay by Peter Galassi, Chief Curator of Photography at the Museum, offers an entirely new understanding of Cartier-Bresson's extraordinary career and its overlapping contexts of journalism and art. The extensive supporting material--featuring detailed chronologies of the photographer's professional travels and of spreads of his picture stories as they appeared in magazines--will revolutionize the study of Cartier-Bresson's work.

Описание: The Art of Cartier is published to coincide with the exhibition of more than 400 pieces from the historic collection of the legendary French jeweler Cartier at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, although it was his three grandsons--Jacques, Louis and Pierre--who were responsible for launching the brand name worldwide. Indeed, so successful were they that we can read across from the story of Cartier to the wider history of the twentieth century: a Panther clip brooch bought by Wallis Simpson in 1949; the now-infamous Ruby Suite presented to Elizabeth Taylor by her third husband, Mike Todd, in 1957. The Art of Cartier offers a comprehensive selection of the finest jewels that Cartier has repurchased over the years, in an attempt to assemble a representative collection of the Maison's production and to show the evolution of its style during the first half of the twentieth century. The items on exhibit range from the great tiaras in the so-called "garland" style of the early twentieth century to Art Deco jewels and others inspired by exotic places (including the famous Tutti Frutti bracelet of diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires all nestled in a frieze of foliage), gold jewelry of the 1930s and 1940s and one-off commissions for leading personalities of the century such as Coco Chanel, Maria Felix and Grace Kelly. This sumptuous volume includes 950 color photographs and introduces us to one of the world's finest jewelry collections, allowing us to appreciate the creativity and mastery of Cartier's designers and artist-jewelers over the course of more than 100 years.
The Poplars housing development in suburban Paris is home to what one resident called the “Little-Middles” – a social group on the tenuous border between the working- and middle- classes. In the 1960s The Poplars was a site of upward social mobility, which fostered an egalitarian sense of community among residents. This feeling of collective flourishing was challenged when some residents moved away, selling their homes to a new generation of upwardly mobile neighbors from predominantly immigrant backgrounds. This volume explores the strained reception of these migrants, arguing that this is less a product of racism and xenophobia than of anxiety about social class and the loss of a sense of community that reigned before.

It juxtaposes the different aesthetics of cities like New York, Paris, London, Berlin, and Sao Paulo, highlighting styles specific to each city and the diverse practices of contemporary artists who began in the graffiti movement. There are interviews with artists who influenced the development of street art and with others, such as gallery owners, who were involved in its evolution.
