Описание: A new survey of the best works by the elusive and spectacular Spanish Impressionist Joaquin Sorolla. Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla's major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla's life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist's previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.

Описание:

Sorolla was the perfect chronicler of trends and styles in clothing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Spanish painter Joaqu n Sorolla was a keen observer of the life and styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sorolla was fascinated by fashion, and the way women presented themselves at the seaside, in their homes, in cafes and on city streets; his letters home to his wife from his sojourns in Paris report on new trends and the dresses he was going to bring home for her and

his daughters.

Sorolla's interest in fashion is obvious in his work, even when it is not ostensibly his subject; the women who appear in his canvases--bathed in flickering light and registered in loose, dynamic brushstrokes--present an evocative catalog of the day's trends in dress, jewelry and accessories. Gossamer sashes blowing in sea air, dizzyingly delicate lace embroidery, and pleated bodices--Sorolla captured a sumptuous parade of styles in his paintings.

Lavishly produced and richly illustrated, Sorolla and Fashion brings together paintings by the artist and a selection of related clothing from the period. Including works drawn from public and private collections in Spain and abroad, this volume focuses on the female portraits that the artist executed between 1890 and 1920--from intimate pictures of his family to more formal portrait commissions.

Spanish painter Joaqu n Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) has been called the "painter of light" for the shimmering, luminous quality of his large-scale Impressionist paintings of contemporary social life. Traveling between Spain, Paris and the United States throughout his career, Sorolla combined an academic training, attention to the quality of daily life in his native Valencia and an awareness of international art trends in his work.

Описание:

The definitive monograph on the Spanish master of light

Containing over 300 reproductions of his most important works, Joaqu n Sorolla is an essential survey on this ever-popular painter. It includes an in-depth essay by Blanca Pons-Sorolla, as well as an illustrated chronology.

Starting out as a painter of works intended for the salon and national exhibitions, Joaqu n Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) very soon developed a style of open-air painting of his own which, though not connected stylistically with the Barbizon School, nevertheless pursued the same approach, as a result of which he came to be known as a Spanish impressionist painter.

He began to devote himself entirely to this style in 1900, painting landscapes, views of cities, studies of nature, seascapes and garden scenes in which he demonstrated his tremendous skill in capturing the effects of light. One such painting reproduced here, Sewing the Sail, exemplifies Sorolla's skill with light in the abstract. A pure white sail captures the shimmering pattern of the sun through garden plants. Excluding the plants, their pots, the seamstresses and the bright pastel-colored seaside landscape in the background, the sail on close examination betrays Sorolla's complex coloration--a precise mix of pinks, blues and yellows--that gives the viewer the impression of a simple white sail with sun and shade.

Описание: Two masterpieces of piano literature of entirely different character: The very lively three-movement Piano Concerto in G major is characterized, with regard to style, by jazz influences, especially in the first and third movements, but by late Romantic and impressionist influences in the middle movement. Ravel himself called it `a concerto in the truest sense of this generic term: With that, I want to say that it has been written in the spirit of the concertos by Mozart and Saint-Saens.`The one-movement concerto in D major for the left hand combines powerful monumental sounds with a slender exotic orchestration. Commissioned by the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein whose right arm had to be amputated following a war injury, the one-movement piano setting seems amazingly complete all the same. The technical realization of this piece is a real challenge for the pianist, but the work fascinates by its intensity, power, sensuality, exoticism and beauty. Besetzung:piano and orchestra
