Their core argument is that the market does not introduce wrongness where there was not any previously. Thus, if you may do it for free, you may do it for money.

Описание: "Multiverse" cosmologies imagine our universe as just one of a vast number of others. Beginning with ancient Atomist and Stoic philosophies, Mary-Jane Rubenstein links contemporary models of the multiverse to their forerunners and explores the reasons for their recent appearance. The allure of the multiverse is that it can account for the origin and nature of the universe without appealing to a creator. Ironically, however, the multiverse replaces God with an equally baffling article of faith: the existence of universes beyond, before, or after our own. In their very efforts to sidestep metaphysics, Rubenstein argues, multiverse scenarios collide with it, even producing counter-theological narratives. Far from invalidating multiverse hypotheses, however, this collision secures their scientific viability. In the modern turn to the multiverse, we may be witnessing a radical reconfiguration of physics, philosophy, and religion.

Автор: Barucci Emilio Название: Financial Markets Theory / Equilibrium, Efficiency and Information ISBN: 185233469X ISBN-13(EAN): 9781852334697 Издательство: Springer Рейтинг: Цена: 79150.00 T Наличие на складе: Поставка под заказ. Описание: Financial Markets Theory presents classical asset pricing theory, a theory composed of milestones such as portfolio selection, risk aversion, fundamental asset pricing theorem, portfolio frontier, CAPM, CCAPM, APT, the Modigliani-Miller Theorem, no arbitrage/risk neutral evaluation and information in financial markets. Starting from an analysis of the empirical tests of the above theories, the author provides a discussion of the most recent literature, pointing out the main advancements within classical asset pricing theory and the new approaches designed to address open problems (e.g. behavioural finance). It is the only textbook to address the economic foundations of financial markets theory from a mathematically rigorous standpoint, and to offer a self-contained critical discussion, based on empirical results. Financial Markets Theory is an advanced book, well-suited for a first graduate course in financial markets, economics or financial mathematics. It is self-contained and introduces topics in a setting accessible to economists and practitioners equipped with a basic mathematical background. For those not acquainted with standard microeconomic theory, the tools needed to follow the analysis are presented early in the book. The approach makes this a vital handbook for practitioners in insurance, banking, investment funds and financial consultancy, as well as an excellent graduate-reference textbook.

Описание: Recent commentators on Russia's economic reforms have almost uniformly declared them a disappointing - and avoidable - failure. In this book, two American
scholars take a new and more balanced look at the country's attempts to build capitalism on the ruins of Soviet central planning. They show how and why the Russian reforms achieved
remarkable breakthroughs in some areas but came undone in others.
Unlike Eastern European countries such as Poland or the Czech Republic, to which it is often
compared, Russia is a federal, ethnically diverse, industrial giant with an economy heavily oriented towards raw materials extraction. The political obstacles it faced in designing reforms
were incomparably greater. Shleifer and Treisman tell how Russia's leaders, navigating in uncharted economic terrain, managed to find a path around some of these
obstacles.
In successful episodes, central reformers devised a strategy to win over some key opponents, while dividing and marginalizing others. Such political tactics made
possible the rapid privatization of 14,000 state enterprises in 1992-94 and the defeat of inflation in 1995. But failure to outmanoeuver the new oligarchs and regional governors after
1996 undermined reformers' attempts to collect taxes and clean up the bureaucracy that has stifled business growth.
Renewing a strain of analysis that runs from Machiavelli
to Hirschman, the authors reach conclusions about political strategies that have important implications for other reformers. They draw on their extensive knowledge of the country and
recent experience as advisors to Russian policymakers. Written in an accessible style, the book should appeal to economists, political scientists, policymakers, businesspeople and all
those interested in Russian politics or economics.
Two prominent thinkers argue for the possibility of a theory of concepts that takes reference to be concepts' sole semantic property.
In cognitive science, conceptual content is frequently understood as the "meaning" of a mental representation. This position raises largely empirical questions about what concepts are, what form they take in mental processes, and how they connect to the world they are about. In Minds without Meaning, Jerry Fodor and Zenon Pylyshyn review some of the proposals put forward to answer these questions and find that none of them is remotely defensible.
Fodor and Pylyshyn determine that all of these proposals share a commitment to a two-factor theory of conceptual content, which holds that the content of a concept consists of its sense together with its reference. Fodor and Pylyshyn argue instead that there is no conclusive case against the possibility of a theory of concepts that takes reference as their sole semantic property. Such a theory, if correct, would provide for the naturalistic account of content that cognitive science lacks -- and badly needs. Fodor and Pylyshyn offer a sketch of how this theory might be developed into an account of perceptual reference that is broadly compatible with empirical findings and with the view that the mental processes effecting perceptual reference are largely preconceptual, modular, and encapsulated.

Описание: A readable and advanced introductory-level text focusing on the ethical dimensions and impact of Lacan`s thinking. This book argues that a rethinking of the subject necessitates a rethinking of our relation to law, tradition and morality, as well as our understanding of guilt, responsibility and desire.
A nuanced discussion of human enhancement that argues for enhancement that does not significantly exceed what is currently possible for human beings.
The transformative potential of genetic and cybernetic technologies to enhance human capabilities is most often either rejected on moral and prudential grounds or hailed as the future salvation of humanity. In this book, Nicholas Agar offers a more nuanced view, making a case for moderate human enhancement -- improvements to attributes and abilities that do not significantly exceed what is currently possible for human beings. He argues against radical human enhancement, or improvements that greatly exceed current human capabilities.
Agar explores notions of transformative change and motives for human enhancement; distinguishes between the instrumental and intrinsic value of enhancements; argues that too much enhancement undermines human identity; considers the possibility of cognitively enhanced scientists; and argues against radical life extension. Making the case for moderate enhancement, Agar argues that many objections to enhancement are better understood as directed at the degree of enhancement rather than enhancement itself. Moderate human enhancement meets the requirement of truly human enhancement. By radically enhancing human cognitive capabilities, by contrast, we may inadvertently create beings ("post-persons") with moral status higher than that of persons. If we create beings more entitled to benefits and protections against harms than persons, Agar writes, this will be bad news for the unenhanced. Moderate human enhancement offers a more appealing vision of the future and of our relationship to technology.

Описание: This book is one of the ?nal products of a research project on the effects of market imperfectionson economic behavior and decisions. The project was put together by four Italian universities (Universita di Roma "Tor Vergata" and "La Sapienza" U- versita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - Piacenza and the Universita di Urbino "Carlo Bo") in 2005 and funded by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research for the period 2006-2007. The research title of the project "Corporate governance, ?nancial systems and ?rms' performances" was indicative of its agenda: to inv- tigate the role of market imperfections and their interactions on ?rms' decisions. In 2006 (May 12) the research group held the ?rst conference at the Universita di Urbino where intermediate results were ?rst presented and discussed with o- standing scholars from US, UK, and Italian universities, and the European Central Bank. The book reproduces the papers presented at the Universitad iRoma"La Sapienza" conference (May 16-17 2008) and is organized in two parts. The ?rst one discusses imperfectionsthat are mainly related to the working of ?nancial m- kets. The second part includes contributions which focus on different topics of real market imperfections. We wish to thank Steve Nickell, Philip Vermeulen and all the participants at the Urbino and Rome conferences who made both events extremely productive with their scienti?c contributions. We are especially grateful to Bob Chirinko who p- ticipatedinbothconferencesandconstantlyencouragedustocarryoutourscienti?c project on the economics of imperfect markets.
