Описание: America`s First Soldiers unfolds with the critical events and people that lead Massachusetts to initiate the American Revolutionary War. These first soldiers were the catalyst for the skirmish at Lexington Green, the battle of the Old North Bridge, and the life and death struggle along a 16-mile road, passing through six Massachusetts towns in a violent, running battle of fire and maneuver. Dig in on the deadly struggle for a Boston hilltop, Breed`s Hill, known as Bunker Hill. For the British Army, it was the deadliest battle of the American Revolutionary War. This battle, more than any other event, created the moment Massachusetts and the other colonies realized the American Revolution had begun. Meet a young Boston bookseller who believed he could bomb the mighty British army out of Boston. He became Washington`s Yankee, standing with him from Boston to victory at Yorktown. He was the man General Washington personally chose to succeed him as the Continental Army`s commanding general. America`s First Soldiers is the account of extraordinary men whose defeat of the British was so thorough, that during the eight-year struggle of the American Revolutionary War the British never again fought in Massachusetts. Part 1 of this book chronicles America`s First Soldiers. Part 2 visits some of the well-preserved and fascinating sites in Massachusetts as a 21st-century historical tourist. This book uncovers the hidden story of the men from Massachusetts-America`s First Soldiers.

Описание: The whimsical debut picture book by two celebrated novelists about a slug, desperate to fit in at all costs, and the adventure he embarks upon to learn that maybe being yourself is best of all! Serge was a snail without a shell. His mum and his dad were shell-less as well. "You`re no more than a SLUG!" the snails at school taunted. I wish I had a shell. It was all that Serge wanted. Serge is not like the snails at school. They call him a horrible name.. slug.. and even though that`s entirely what he is, he wishes for a shell of his own. Feeling like an outcast, Serge sets off on a solo adventure in search of the elusive shell that will make a perfect home and make him just like everybody else. After some much-needed advice from his friend Fish, he finds himself at the ocean, where many options await: "Big shells and teeny shells/ All the in-betweeny shells/ Pyramid and swirly shells/Altogether curly shells!". But can Serge find the perfect shell, or is he destined to be different forever? A charming, lyrical story with bouncy text, whimsically illustrated by artist Andrea Blinick, Serge the Snail Without A Shell puts a modern twist on a tale as old as time: trying to fit in at all costs, before realizing that maybe being yourself is best of all.
Historians have tended to dismiss pacifism and the peace movement of the Civil War era, arguing that most Americans believed in the war as an answer to the crisis of secession. This groundbreaking book offers a much needed new perspective on role played by pacifism during and after Civil War era. Thomas Curran focuses on the "perfectionist pacifists", a group of northerners whose views on Christian perfection and obligation forced them to take an extreme pacifist stance during the War. Curran tracks wartime opposition into the postwar years, when the perfectionists united to create the Universal Peace Union (UPU), America’s most radical peace organization of the late nineteenth century. In this respect, the UPU represented a continuation of the optimistic perfectionism found in the reform movements of the antebellum era, a sentiment that some historians have argued became a victim of the horrors of the Civil War and its aftermath. The UPU became involved in a range of causes, including Reconstruction, Native American rights, labor relations, and women’s rights. Through the UPU the perfectionists sought to reform all aspects of society to their understanding of the laws of God--a continuation of the optimistic perfectionism found in the reform movements of the antebellum era. Although the UPU had successes during its forty-seven years of operation, it ultimately failed to achieve its idealistic agenda. In Curran’s fresh, insightful account, this story shines light on the limitations, often self-imposed, that many reform groups face in achieving their goals.
