Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse Volume 2

Автор: Preedy, Victor R.

Описание:

Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse, Volume 2: Stimulants, Club and Dissociative Drugs, Hallucinogens, Steroids, Inhalants and International Aspects is the second of three volumes in this informative series and offers a comprehensive examination of the adverse consequences of the most common drugs of abuse. Each volume serves to update the reader's knowledge on the broader field of addiction as well as to deepen understanding of specific addictive substances. Volume 2 addresses stimulants, club and dissociative drugs, hallucinogens, and inhalants and solvents. Each section provides data on the general, molecular and cellular, and structural and functional neurological aspects of a given substance, with a focus on the adverse consequences of addictions.

Research shows that the neuropathological features of one addiction are often applicable to those of others, and understanding these commonalties provides a platform for studying specific addictions in more depth and may ultimately lead researchers toward new modes of understanding, causation, prevention, and treatment. However, marshalling data on the complex relationships between addictions is difficult due to the myriad material and substances.

  • Offers a modern approach to understanding the pathology of substances of abuse, offering an evidence-based ethos for understanding the neurology of addictions
  • Fills an existing gap in the literature by serving as a "one-stop-shopping" synopsis of everything to do with the neuropathology of drugs of addiction and substance misuse
  • Includes in each chapter: list of abbreviations, abstract, introduction, applications to other addictions and substance misuse, mini-dictionary of terms, summary points, 6+ figures and tables, and full references
  • Offers coverage of preclinical, clinical, and population studies, from the cell to whole organs, and from the genome to whole body

Описание: Immunology has made significant progress in the past decade, driven forward by rapidly advancing technology and a renewed interest in the vast realm of innate immunity. The receptors that mediate these functions are at the front lines of both protective and regulative roles of the immune system.  In Immune Receptors: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers present a variety of experimental approaches to the characterization of immune receptors and the cell biology that mediates their functions.  These include imaging techniques that aim to understand receptor localization and trafficking, techniques to measure receptor-ligand interactions, strategies to identify novel ligands and methods to analyze downstream receptor signaling, as well as strategies for genomic and proteomic characterization of receptor repertoires. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters include introductions to their respective subjects, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Immune Receptors: Methods and Protocols offers technical descriptions and protocols that will be useful both to investigators who are interested in carrying out these procedures and to those who seek a deeper understanding of the bench science that lies behind the immunology literature.

Описание: Natural Killer (NK) cells are large granular lymphocytes of the innate immune system. They are widespread throughout the body, being present in both lymphoid organs and non-lymphoid peripheral tissues. NK cells are involved in direct innate immune reactions against viruses, bacteria, parasites and other triggers of pathology, such as malignant transformation, all of which cause stress in affected cells. Importantly, NK cells also link the innate and adaptive immune responses, contributing to the initiation of adaptive immune responses and executing adaptive responses using the CD16 FcgRIIIA immunoglobulin Fc receptor. Such responses are mediated through two major effector functions, the direct cytolysis of target cells and the production of cytokines and chemokines. The authors focus here on the nature of recognition events by NK cells and address how these events are integrated to trigger these distinct and graded effector functions.

Описание: For both branches of the adaptive immune system, regulatory molecules i.e. coreceptors and ligands control the signaling cascades initiated by engagement of the T cell and B cell antigen receptors. This book describes these molecules` functions and mechanisms.
