Описание:

Essays and interviews that examine the work of an artist whose witty, poignant, and trenchant photographs investigate the life cycle of art objects.

Louise Lawler has devoted her art practice to investigating the life cycle of art objects. Her photographs depict art in the collectors home, the museum, the auction house, and the commercial gallery, on loading docks, and in storage closets. Her work offers a sustained meditation on the strategies of display that shape arts reception and distribution. The cumulative effect of Lawlers photographs is a silent insistence that context is the primary shaper of arts meaning. Informed by feminism and institutional critique, Lawlers witty, poignant, and trenchant photos frequently pay attention to a host of overlooked details -- almost Freudian slips -- that ineffably and tacitly shore up what we conventionally think of as arts power.

This book includes the earliest published text on Lawlers work; an examination of her ephemera (Lawler produced, among other things, matchbooks and paperweights); a rare interview with the artist, conducted by Douglas Crimp; a conversation between George Baker and Andrea Fraser on Lawlers work; and essays by writers including Rosalind Krauss, Rosalyn Deutsche, and Helen Molesworth, the volumes editor. The book traces the changing reception of Lawlers work from early preoccupations with appropriation to later discussions of affect.

Описание: One of this UK's pre-eminent artists, Louise Bourgeois is a unique figure in contemporary art. Born in Paris in 1911, Bourgeois spent most of her career receiving little recognition from the art community. She has worked closely to many of the century's key artistic moments, from Surreali to Abstract Expressionism to feminist-inspired art, and yet remains distinct from all these. An extraordinarily influential sculptor, she has worked, often experimentally, with materials varying from alabaster, plaster, latex, bronze, and marble to found objects. She is equally admired for her intimate drawings at times combining fragments of text (featured at Documenta 11, 2002) with her highly personal writings, which often address her long and complex life story. With the combined backdrops of a conflicted family upbringing and her father's tapestry restoring business (whose weaving provides a recurring symbol in her work); her struggles as an artist in a world reserved for men; as well as her experiences as a mother, the subjects of her work are as broad as the materials in which she expresses them. Themes such as the Other, the feminine and the masculine, the body as well as her own specific biography spin a tangled and intense, lifelong body of work of unusual profundity. Bourgeois has presented her work in many of the world's most prestigious museums, including a major one-person exhibition New York's Museum of Modern Art. In 1993 she represented the United States at the Venice Biennale.

Louise Nevelson: A Passionate Life

Описание: Louise Nevelson, one of the most important American sculptors of the twentieth century, was a beautiful woman who lived so audacious a life that by the time of her death she was a legend both inside and outside the art world.

Born Leah Berliawsky in Czarist Russia in 1899, she grew up in Maine, ostracized as a Jew and a foreigner. At twenty she escaped to Manhattan as Mrs. Charles Nevelson, eventually leaving her husband for a life devoted to art. She lived and loved with lusty abandon, often in poverty and obscurity, until she finally achieved fame and fortune at sixty. "This biography of a monstre sacre is a tale of hard-tacks heroism and heedless swipes at those who dared to love her," said Interview magazine.

Nevelson found inspiration in cubism, primitive art, and her own unconscious, creating a rich iconography of images. With black, white, or gold paint and perfect placement, she transformed old pieces of wood picked up on the street into powerful sculptures.

In later years she appeared in mink eyelashes and flamboyant costumes, all the while going to her studio every day before dawn to add to the astonishing body of work now in collections of museums around the world.

Laurie Lisle interviewed Nevelson before the artist's death in 1988, as well as her lovers, family members, artist friends, and many others. This biography provides fascinating insights and information discovered in archives and public records, letters and diaries, and the artist's own prose and poetry.

Now in a revised e-book edition, Louise Nevelson: A Passionate Life is the only biography of this important American sculptor. It is "impressive in its thoroughness, which nonetheless results in 'good reading' by virtue of its interweaving of personal and professional information, its eclectic introduction of psychological analysis, and a phraseology that appreciates both the pain and the joy surrounding Nevelson's eccentric behavior," according to Woman's Art Journal.

Documenting Louise Nevelson's first museum retrospective

In 1967, for her first museum retrospective, Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) was given carte blanche to transform the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University into an all-emcompassing, theatrical environment for her sculpture. Nevelson installed her show across the whole museum, draping the walls of the permanent collection with the colors that reflected the black, white, gold and navy palette of her works. Louise Nevelson: I Must Recompose the Environment includes previously unpublished exhibition layouts (annotated by Nevelson), installation photographs and texts that place this show in the context of Nevelson's career and the museum's early history. This publication accompanies the now out-of-print catalog of the 1967 show organized in collaboration with the Whitney Museum and serves as a document both of the then-nascent museum and the solidifying legacy of an artistic icon.

Описание:

An ode to Louise Bourgeois's fascination with the spiral, a shape ubiquitous in art and nature and transfixing to the human eye" -Albert Mobilio, Bookforum

In materials as diverse as wood, steel, bronze, latex, marble, plaster, resin, hemp, lead, ink, pencil, crayon, woodcut, watercolor and gouache, Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) investigates every imaginable manifestation of the spiral, from graphic patterns to graphite whorls, wobbly orbits to chiseled vortices, twisted columns to coiling snakes, staircases and pyramids. The cursive blue-paper word drawings also included, in English and French, complement the purely visual works by conveying the spirit of Bourgeois' writing in extraordinary pictorial forms. Bourgeois called the spiral "an attempt at controlling the chaos. It has two directions. Where do you place yourself, at the periphery or at the vortex?" In another context, she has also stated "I would dream of my father's mistress. I would do it in my dreams by wringing her neck. The spiral--I love the spiral--represents control and freedom."

Описание: The sexually charged works of Louise Bourgeois and Hans Bellmer reveal remarkable parallels, even though the artists never actually met. Louise Bourgeois (19112010) skeptically examined the traditional image of women, Hans Bellmer (19021975) created in the puppet an idea woman in which all his desires and fantasies are reflected. This publication establishes for the first time a dialogue between two artists, which are marked by the views of a male and female artist, respectively, as well as by personal obsessions and desires.
