Описание: This book explores the direct connections and collaborations of German and Russian artists and the affinities between both countries’ artistic development. Russian Modernism maps the Russian version of expressionism and puts it in the context of the history of 20th century art.
Russian Modernism is dedicated to the radical modernist movements in Russian and German art during the early years of the 20th century. Their development was parallel and often intertwined. Artists such as Vasily Kandinsky or Alexej von Jawlensky are claimed by the Germans but remain Russian artists for the Russians. The Burluk brothers, who became celebrities of the Russian radical art scene, participated in the first exhibition of the Blauer Reiter. Russian artists travelled to Germany and lived there, while their German counterparts were aware of what was shown in Moscow exhibition halls. The diverse art movement “expressionism” was formed in Germany at the beginning of the 1910s and was given the name by the critic Herwarth Walden. Members of groups such as Die Brucke and the Blauer Reiter were initially influenced by the French Fauves movement, and their Russian contemporaries also tried to find new artistic truth in Paris, ‘la Ville Lumiere’. However, both in Germany and Russia the new French influence underwent radical transformation. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book provides an insight into the work of Russian and German artists in the early years of the 20th century.

The most comprehensive, beautiful book ever to be published on dance in America. "We look at the dance to impart the sensation of living in an affirmation of life, to energize the spectator into keener awareness of the vigor, the mystery, the humor, the variety, and the wonder of life. This is the function of the American dance." Groundbreaking choreographer Martha Graham deeply understood the power and complexity of dance--particularly as it evolved in her home country. "American Dance," by critic and journalist Margaret Fuhrer, traces that richly complex evolution. From Native American dance rituals to dance in the digital age, "American Dance "explores centuries of innovation, of individual genius and collaborative exploration. Some of its stories--such as Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling or Alvin Ailey founding the trailblazing company that bears his name--will be familiar to anyone who loves dance. Others are rarely told, yet no less riveting. The complex origins of tap, for instance, or the Puritan outrage against "profane and promiscuous dancing" during the early years of the United States, are as full of mystery and humor as Graham describes. These various developments have never before been presented in a single book, making "American Dance "the most comprehensive work on the subject to date. Breakdancing, musical-theater dance, disco, ballet, jazz, ballroom, modern, hula, the Charleston, the Texas two-step, swing--these are just some of the forms celebrated in this riveting volume." "Hundreds of photographs accompany the text, making "American Dance "as visually captivating as the works it depicts.

Twentieth-century American society wittily and ironically portrayed by a great artist. ?Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), one of the most popular American artists of the past century, has often been regarded as a simple illustrator and had his work identified with the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. He is, instead, a total artist. An acute observer of human nature and talented storyteller, Rockwell captured America's evolving society in small details and nuances, portraying scenes of the everyday life of ordinary people and presenting a personal and often idealized interpretation of the American identity. His images offered a reassuring visual haven in a period of epoch-making transformation that led to the birth of the modern American society.
The art of Norman Rockwell entered the homes of millions of Americans for over fifty years, illustrating the Roaring Twenties, the Depression, World War II, and the 1950s and 1960s. His works mirror aspects of the life of average Americans with precise realism and often in a humorous light. The exhibition catalog organized in collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, presents well-known and beloved masterpieces like the Triple Self-Portrait (1960), Girl at the Mirror (1954), and The Art Critic (1955) alongside carefully observed images of youthful innocence (No Swimming, 1921) and paintings with a powerful social message like The Problem We All Live With (1964).

With Fishers work extremely hot on the collectibles market, new and seasoned buyers alike will benefit from the advice of antiques dealer and Price Guide author Bruce Magnotti.
Conceived by four of the most influential art historians of our time, this groundbreaking book has now been updated and expanded to include the most recent developments in contemporary art. The original authors have been joined by David Joselit to provide the most comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries ever published.
More than 120 articles are presented in a year-by-year structure, with each focusing on a crucial event from the creation of a seminal work to the opening of a major exhibition to tell the myriad stories of art from 1900 to the present. Key turning points and breakthroughs in modernism are explored, as are the antimodernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. The book s flexible structure and extensive cross-referencing allow readers to follow the many developments in the art world, from the influence of surrealism to the emergence of minimalism. A four-part introduction outlines the methodologies governing the discipline of art history, and two roundtable discussions examine the questions raised by the past while looking ahead to the future.

Описание: With Silicon Valley in the north and Hollywood in the south, California has become a magnet for creative and entrepreneurial types from within the United States and around the world. Architects have not been immune to the Golden State's aesthetic and cultural draw. Here, in the melting pot of world cultures and native talent, modern residential architecture has been reborn.
From the seaside towns of Los Angeles to the rolling hills of San Francisco and the wine country of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, California's adventurous architects have reached back to the cultural and economic optimism of the 1950s to give modern architectural design a new look. With its mild climate and sun-filled days, California has always been a natural fit for modernism's tenets of open plans, indoor-outdoor living, and expansive window walls. There modernist design concepts have adapted easily to the 21st Century's demand for green architecture and energy conservation.
Many of the houses in California Cool are energy independent and built using either recycled or sustainable materials. California Cool includes contemporary work from some of modern architecture's progenitor's from the mid 20th century along with designs from the young practitioners of the 21st century, who can be found working out of converted warehouses and lofts in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Berkeley. From north to south, this beautifully illustrated book captures the rich, creative vibrancy of California's modern architectural presence.
