The compelling story of how an art celebrity and icon of the Mexican left came to New York in 1931 to paint eight murals at The Museum of Modern Art
In 1931, Diego Rivera was the subject of The Museum of Modern Art's second monographic exhibition, which set new attendance records in its five-week run. The Museum brought Rivera to New York six weeks before the show's opening and gave him on-site studio space. There he produced five "portable murals" --large blocks of frescoed plaster, slaked lime and wood that feature bold images drawn from Mexican subject matter and address themes of revolution and class inequity. After the opening, to great publicity, Rivera added three more murals, now taking on New York subjects through monumental images of the urban working class and the city during the Great Depression. Published in conjunction with an exhibition that brings together key works made for Rivera's 1931 show, this catalogue casts the artist as a highly cosmopolitan figure who traveled between Russia, Mexico and the United States and examines the intersection of artmaking and radical politics in the 1930s. Illustrated with reproductions of each panel as well as related paintings, drawings, prints and documentary photographs, the book's essays investigate the international politics of muralism, Rivera's history with MoMA, the iconography of the portable murals and technical aspects of the artist's working process. Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was a central figure in the development of Mexican muralism, an ambitious public art initiative intended to relay Mexico's ideals after the Revolution (1910-1920). A highly cosmopolitan artist, Rivera had spent many years in Europe before returning to Mexico in 1921, and in 1927 he traveled to the Soviet Union where he met Alfred Barr, the soon-to-be founding director of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Rivera's artistic celebrity benefitted from major commissions in the United States, including murals for the Pacific Stock Exchange, the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, MoMA and the Detroit Institute of Arts. By the 1930s, he enjoyed an unrivaled status at the center of international debates about public art and politics..

While it offered a new design paradigm that would transform the urban landscape from New York to New Delhi, modernism was a slow burn for residential architects. The sharp edges and simple geometries were a hard sell for the American design psyche. A group of innovative architects in the USA took Bauhaus modernism and gave it a vernacular face. They borrowed forms from the simple utilitarian buildings found in rural environments and created a new strain of modernism. Russell Abraham dubs this style 'rural modernism' - a modern aesthetic with a vernacular palette. The result of several ingenious ideas blended together to create a contemporary, sustainable and highly liveable architecture, these houses respect the past while looking forward to the future. Orienting windows to capture heat in winter and provide sun protection in summer is standard, while other sustainable design features include solar-thermal systems, subterranean heat sinks, geothermal trenches and rainwater collection systems -all of which are incorporated to make the most of the natural resources available in rural settings.

Описание: In New Farmhouse Style talented designer Terry John Woods and photographer Kindra Clineff introduced us to their beautiful world of rustic farmhouse style by displaying Woods' own centuries old farmhouse in Vermont. Now in Farmhouse Modern, Woods takes his design sensibility even further by profiling homes in the northeast that are putting a new spin on vintage farmhouse design. Farmhouse Modern will feature profiles of homes decorated and styled by Woods along with text on reinventing your home through creative placement of objects and gathering collections both antique and modern. As Woods says, "The elements of modern design may best be appreciated when combined with more traditional components. Sleek lined furnishings paired with a farmhouse antique create contrast and scale that draws focus to the unique qualities each piece has to offer." Woods will also provide advice on shopping at flea markets, yard sales and estate sales which is where he finds most of the furniture in his homes. Over 200 gorgeous photographs by Kindra Clineff will reveal the farmhouses in the same lush and warm style fans of New Farmhouse Style and Summer House have come to love.

Название: The Age of Collage: Contemporary Collage in Modern Art ISBN: 3899554833 ISBN-13(EAN): 9783899554830 Издательство: Gestalten Рейтинг: Цена: 33210 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: The technique of collage fits perfectly into our current age. Raw visual material is collected by an artist and then combined in such a way as to abstract the individual elements enough that the artist's own vision becomes prominent. Because collage s references range from other artistic works and techniques to scientific images, pop culture, and erotica, these raw materials reflect humanity's collective visual memory and context. It's collage's broad scope and irreverence that make this technique so interesting for both artist and audience. So it comes as no surprise that a lively scene has developed around contemporary collage in the last few years. Our book Cutting Edges was the first to document work by this scene, which has continued to expand the possibilities of the genre. Beyond the lowbrow movement, which brings a fresh perspective to figurative surrealism, more and more established artists are now embracing this medium. Their work bridges the historical gap between the classic pioneers of the technique from the 1920s and today's vanguard of contemporary collage. Showcasing outstanding current artwork and artists, The Age of Collage is a striking documentation of this new appetite for destructive construction. The book also takes an insightful behind-the-scenes look at those working with this interdisciplinary and cross-media approach. While illustration, painting, and photography continue to fundamentally influence collage, the featured work also plays with elements of abstraction, constructivism, surrealism, and dada. Collage gives artists more room to stake out diverse artistic positions than almost any other existing technique. Through confident cuts, brushstrokes, mouse clicks, or pasting, collage gives the impossible a tangible form while turning our worldview on its head along the way. In their visual confrontation with reality in our digital age, which has already made geographic, temporal, and artistic boundaries obsolete, these artists celebrate and exaggerate simultaneousness.
